Connect3D ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
or
OcUK GeForce 7900 GS 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)

Been out of the upgrading buisiness for a while now but have decided i need a new graphics card. Partly because i'm going to get a new board next year and it's time i step up to pci express.
So which is the better card or are they pretty much the same?

I will deside over the weekend what to order need to look at x1900gt as some say it beats the x1800 and some say it doesnot.
thx
Q

the X1800XT beats it the by quite a margin in "most" cases, but the X1900GT will out perform the X1800XT "barely" in shader intensive game engines, namely Oblivion.

As said many times above, the X1800XT is superior to a 7900GS by a fairly large margin. As for the question of X1800XT vs. X1900GT, the X1800XT is generally faster, but the X1900GT has been shown to take the lead in shader intensive games (i.e. Oblivion) due to having 36 shaders.

The only real reason to get an X1900GT though, is if you want to buy the HIS IceQ 3 version. That version really is quite a beast waiting to be unleashed.

The X1800 is faster in Oblivion by about 25% at 1920x1200. Have both cards here and tested last night

Aye, this is very true, but the X1900GT has a higher minimum framerate according to most benchmarks and we all know how important minimum framerate is in Oblivion.

Not on my rig m8. I ran AtiTray with the OSD and in the wood/tree areas I got 17-19 FPS on the X1900GT that was average not peak. On the X1800 I got 25. It was far more fluid on the X1800. This was at 1920x1200. Medium Textures HDR. :)

Thats on a Badaxe running a 6600 at 3.6G's

Is the x1900gt quiter than the x1800xt. That may be a concideration, unless u playing games 24/7 or install aftermarket cooler.

Yes a lot quieter. Does not have the motor whine of the X1800XT

That's quite interesting actually, but why were you running medium textures might I ask? Both of those cards should be able to handle high with ease.

Good question. To be honest it was just what was setup. No real reason. :) It was just a quick play just to see if they were any good. Until I decide on a top end card.

I have actually gone for the X1800XT as opposed to this setup. Reason. I only have one maze 4 and the X1800XT at 700 Core seems really good.

I got my X1800XT to 730MHz core under air (VF900) so that should really make it fly. I have heard of people getting it to 780MHz under water. :)
