I'm starting to look for a new lens and particularly interested in the Nikon 12-24mm lens. I've read lots of reviews and am aware of the pro's and con's of the sigma, tokina, tamron and the nikon and have pretty much settled on the nikon. I'm looking at staying with nikon for the long term and am therefore willing to look at the lens as a investment.

What i'm interested in discussing is what Nikons long term strategy is for sensor sizes on their slr bodies. The problem being that the 12-24mm lens is specifically made for digital camera. Will it be suitable for use on a camera with a 35mm sensor size in the future.

Does anyone have any advice?

As far as I know(But im not 100% sure, so double check), you will not be able to use it on a full frame body. If you tried, your would be likely to get vignetting, and possibly even having the rear element colliding with the mirror. Im not sure there is much you can do about the matter tbh, other than getting the widest non digital only lens you can find, and live with the slight loss of width from the crop factor of the smaller sensor on your current camera.

I don't think Nikon have the same issues as Canon's EF/EF-S conflict, with regards the physical size/shape of the lens.

Fair enough. I know it could hapen to some cameras/lenses so thought it was worth mentioning.
