I have been using my trusty BenQ FP241W 24" 1920x1200 since 2007, but it has decided to start displaying a 1 pixel horizontal line across the whole width of the screen 1/4 of the way down from the top since a few weeks back I feel it is time for an upgrade. The main use for my computer is gaming, driving games and FPS, with a little photo editing and website design.

I guess my main requirements and or questions are:
  • £225-250
  • IPS Panel?
  • Aspect ratio? Bit of confusion here would a 21:9 1080p screen be good for gaming or should I stick with a 16:9 1080p screen. In an ideal world I would like to stretch the budget to a 16:9 1440p screen.
  • 24" - 27"?
  • Needs to last me a good 5-10 years if possible
  • Is 144hz out of the question at this price?
At the moment I'm leaning towards the LG 25UM58-P 25"

Thanks in advance for your help folks

If you play a lot of online FPS, I'd prioritise refresh rate so a nice 24" 144Hz 1080p screen.

Otherwise a 60Hz 1440p 16:9 or possibly an UW. I'm not a fan of the lower res UW personally.

I wouldn't go for 21:9 unless you are buying big, otherwise the lack of height makes them look much smaller than they really are. I mean even a 29" 21:9 looks smaller than a 24" 16:9, even though there isn't much height difference. So stick to 16:9 1080P. 24" is general purpose, 27" is gaming only. I think you will have to make a choice of 144Hz and IPS, I don't think you will get both for your budget.

There is a screen out there with all your requirements, just depends if you like some unheard of no make!

I 'had' an LG 24GM79G-b 24" 1080p 144hz TN and it was great, apart from being a little small. I took a gamble on an ElectrIQ 32" 1080p 144hz IPS panel and so far I'm really pleased with it. It's absolutely fantastic for gaming on. Not sure about work, I don't do anything graphical so my work from home days are spent coding Avaya IVRs in Orchestration Designer, so I only do text, but it's certainly nicer working on a 32 inch screen over a 24 inch one. IPS is also really nice, colour accuracy seems a lot better and viewing angle is incredible. I paid under £180 for this screen! I was tempted with their 34" ultra wide 1440p screen which can over clock to 100+hz, but it's VA which I was concerned about ghosting and pixel response in fast moving FPS games... also much more expensive, but that didn't really factor as it was a tossup.
