Hey Guys,

Well I'm after a projector, for games consoles (Wii n PS3) and movies?

I'm only looking at spend around £350 max, but I'm only thinking of some Ebay Jobby.

Any suggestions?

-Matt

The Z3 is one of the best for short-throw image sizes.

Use this Projector Calculator to see image sizes for various throw distances for various projectors.

For reference - 7' throw = ~72" image, 8' throw = ~82" image with the Z3 on maximum zoom.

The Z3 also has the advantage of lens shift - meaning you can mount the projector practically on the edge of the projected image - and still have a square image!!

Thank you very much for that buddy, much appreciated :)

Any idea on how much the bulbs are for them? :)

I'm sure a quick search should bring that up, I've had mine for ~2 years now and have only racked up about 1500 hours of use, so I've still got another year or two before I need to think about that! ;)

I just did a measurment and i have 2.2 meters throw distance (allowing for the width of PJ)

The site tells me i have about 73" screen size on full zoom, wow.

I just took down the measurments and cut out string to size again, and blue tack it to my wall, jesus, its MASSIVE!!

Are they pretty easy to set up then? Is it just like putting a dvd into a dvd player then connecting to to the PJ via a scart lead?

I have white wallpaper, recon i will get away without buying a screen if i can get my room pretty much pitch black? :D

Most projectors don't have a scart socket on them...

However, the Z3 has an HDMI, VGA, 2x component, an S-Video and a composite connection (in order from best-worst quality) so you should be able to find some way of connecting stuff up ;)

As for ease of setup - sit it down, point it at a wall/screen, plug in a mains cable and a video cable of your choice to the source of your choice, turn it on, select the input you want and adjust the image position, size and focus.

Then sit back and enjoy! ;)

White wall paper, providing it's not too glossy/shiny, will do as a starter for 10 - but a proper screen will make a massive improvement.

Here's the setup in my room - the projector is above the head of the bed, on an old tv bracket. That's a 5ft wide screen, so about a 68" diagonal image :)

And from almost the same position with the lights off:

I've now got rid of the Sky box, I never really watched it, I've now just got my PC hooked up to it and I use the PC for everything :)

Thats very nice mate :)

How do you connect the pc up to it? Whats the throw distance there?

I've got the PC connected via a cheap 10m VGA cable. I've also got a 17" TFT sat at the side of the room, I just change which monitor is active from within the Windows Display Properties when I want to switch between the two.

Throw is length of bed + ~1-2ft - so about 7-8ft in total. I'm not at full zoom on the projector, so I can go slightly larger, if I was to get a larger screen (but this one was a freebie, so I'm not complaining ;))

I've measured up the screen distance the site gave me, this is how big the screen can go.

View when i sit on my bed, looks pretty big  !

Had a look around, 200-300£ seems about the going rate for one of these.

Seems great:)

What's that big white thing on the right? Can you move that, plus the fan, plus the stuff on top of the TV, and project it just above the top of the TV? It'll be much better to watch than having it up that high ;)

Yep that's about right - my mate just picked one up last week from Ebay for about that :)

Ive got a panasonic AE700e and would reccomend it or the 900.

Its got a short throw distance, joystick to move the lense around and a wide range of connections on the back including Scart.

It's just a lamp that can be moved :)

Looking good then :)

I guess my PC speakers would fit in it untill i buy a surround sound set ? :)

From the pic I would try moving it down a bit... I've got a Phillips cSmart and its positioned the same as yours and it really hurts me neck but there's nothing I can do about it unfortunately. I'll get some pics up for mine as I'm looking for advice on it also. I got it for £100 off ebay and its great - its a multimedia projector so the 360 looks amazing on it :)

Also guys do your projectors give off much heat? Mine really makes the room get hot and the machine itself is hot to the touch - enough to make me need my windows open when I use it

definatly try get it a bit lower, when i first set up a screen it was high up on my wall to go over the top of my desk on an ikea black out blind and it also hurt my neck like Roachy said

I've since realised that having the biggest screen possible isnt necessarily the best thing, so have gone for a smaller screen that is at a pretty good viewing height. even made my own screen using MDF, paints and some black felt tape for light leakage. looks great :)

Im now waitin till i can get it in a bigger room that i can dedicate the PJ to, then i can have the big ass screen without the neck ache

I've seen a PJ for sale, they say its got 127 usage so loads left.

How do you know how many hours its had? How can i trust its only had 127?

You cant which is why you should always budget for a new bulb for any projector which is unknown. You can reset the lamp timers, they are by no means anything to go by when buying one.
