Which UK political party is better for the motorist?

I was just wondering what people's thoughts were on which party in the election was most 'motorist friendly'. To be honest I've only seen bad things from the current mob, namely things like the following:

- Ridiculous increases in car tax
- Ridiculous increases in petrol prices
- The end of free car tax for cars over 25 years old (Labour stopped this from rolling over each year and stuck it at 1973)
- SORN
- Scrappage, the hideous waste of perfectly good vehicles just 10 years old
- Expensive photo licenses

Obviously it's easy to moan about the party who are currently in power, but I really don't remember it being that bad under the tories under whom I drove for about 7 years - they were the ones who brought in the 25 year old free tax law for example meaning my old mk1 Escort was a lot cheaper to run as a student.

What do you guys think? Does anyone know what policies each party will be offereing for the motorist?

tbh I'd prefer if trolls like stockhausen stayed out of the thread and the discussion didn't degenerate into a huge argument. :)

I don't think it will matter which party is in power. Any party will have to use the motorist as a way to make money. One thing is for certain. Moroting is not going to get any cheaper. :(

Sadly I think you're right. I've not heard of anything standing out from any party with regards to helping the motorist.

All there of the major parties are going to screw us if they where to get in.

UKIP are the only party I've found that vaguely have any good motoring policies (their strong opposition of a europe wide TUV style approval for modifications gets a big thumbs up from me) but it is a shame that voting for them would be like not voting at all. They haven't got a chance :(.

The number of people I have heard say this is amazing; does no-one realise it's a self-fulfilling prophecy?

But because of the sheer number of people in this country and the way the electoral system works its entirely true - get all your mates to vote for them if you want - they WONT win.

The LibDems have per mile road pricing in their manifesto.
Quite, so this renders the party better for the motorist dependant on a completely unevaluated or unevaluable proposal! I suspect the result will be if your roads are not currently congested, the Lib Dems will be financially advantageous for you as a motorist.

Actually, their stance was to lower tax when fuel costs rise, but to increase tax when fuel costs drop.

I am aware of that - and they have publically stated that at current fuel prices, the system would result in a reduction of the current price by approximately 10p a litre.

Just to add a bit more from the manifesto:

Undertake preparations for the introduction of a system of road pricing in a second parliament. Any such system would be revenue- neutral for motorists, with revenue from cars used to abolish Vehicle Excise Duty and reduce fuel duty, helping those in rural areas who have no alternatives to road travel. Some of the revenue from lorries would be used to fund further extensions of high speed rail through the UK Infrastructure Bank.

Sounds ok to me.

Most likely. But I suggest to anyone wavering between the main players because they are all the same, a vote for UKIP is at least not a wasted vote in the way not voting, or voting for any of the main players, is.

I don't see why it's needed. People who use the roads more already pay more tax than people who don't - it's called Fuel Duty.

Another brainless idea from the Lib Dems.
