Hi all, Just wondering if you could help me select a “warm” hatch!

Been reading the forums some time, and they are a good laugh ("what is a hot hatch" topic springs to mind) so finally joined, will probably be in the pc section as much as here.

This is my outgoing car and reason for sale,
Ibiza 04 2.0 8v “sport” with 48k on the clock, to sum it up, good build quality, niggling starting issues, Very poor performance while drinking fuel, if it was quicker the mpg would not bother me (low to mid 20mpg around the doors, low 30’s on a run)
I did not choose it, it is the partners and we have sold my car (boooo).

The car in question I am after needs to have some requirements:

Ideally be 05 at the oldest (imposed by partner)
A warm hatch speed of 0-60 in 8 seconds or lower
As depreciation proof as feasibly possible.......
I am happy with up to 60k on the clock
Mpg not a major worry only do about 6k per year as we both commute to work

All with a budget of 4-6 k

My initial though was a Ford Fiesta St, however I have read a lot of reports that they depreciate like stones. They are relatively expensive in the north. 6-7k for a 06-07 plate or 8k for a 08. Around the forums I have heard people say they would not spend more than 3-4, well around here 4.5 is where they start and that’s for an old one with a lot of miles on. I did see one that went quickly that was 5 k low mileage 06, but that’s the only one around this area with more realistic pricing.

Potential cars

Mazda 3 2.0 06 plate low mileage 5k (slow?)

Focus 2.0 06 plate 5k (slow?)

Swift sport various (slow?)

Leon, either a 2.0 sport or a 2.0 tfsi (not the fr its out the price range) not sure if I can live with the major platicky interior, I actually prefer the old shape but none with sensible miles around here. A golf would be nice but it’d have to be a mk5 which seem out of price range!

Fiesta st, various, poor depreciation.

Colt CZT specs seemed perfect but I do not think I could live with the interior or general car look.

Civics ruled out friends have the newer shape which is out of budget, also the few old shape ones I have seen have had star ship miles on.

If it was just me I would buy something old like an mr2, escort rs2000/sirocco/ corrado or something with a rover or mg badge on maybe a zr 160. But sadly my option of picking the car has the age stipulation (and no rover/mgs); yes she knows exactly what I would buy an old wreck probably!

Advice appreciated !:D

Nothing wrong with a Fiesta ST. I bought mine a year ago and still enjoy driving it.
Does depreciation really matter? How long do you plan on owning the car for?

I do t think any of your list bar the turbo leon will get you to 60 in under 8 seconds (maybe the st?). Though I would ask if this really matters? The likes of the swift sport and fiesta st are cracking little cars to chuck around, if you want something slightly bigger you would probably be best looking st something with a turbo, 2 litre focus or mazda 3 will feel slow and not particularly pleasing to rag around the place. Exception being the 3.2 a3, cracking engine. Bigger again and youll get the likes of the mondeo st. Could you afford an octavia vrs? Nicer inside then the leon

4-6k is quite a large spread of budget...

Certianly is, im cheap so would rather get something cheaper.

I keep thinking if I get something cheaper I will be allowed a project car at a later date but I think im dreaming !

I plan on owning the car 2-3 years.

It does not have to be under 8 seconds but I would prefer to have a sportier car while I am not concerned about mpg.

The best shout is probably the LCR, I would settle for just a cupra but not seen many about. I do know where there is a red cupra R may have another look at that.

As for the A3 I was looking at a 05 3.2 but it was 7k a bit over what I wanted to pay.

if you shop around you'll get a a3 3.2 for less than that.

my old man paid 5.5k for his 55 plate albeit with 100k on the clock

Sorry to rain on your parade, but I'm afraid to say that I've seen women/families/old people in base model examples of all of those cars, so sadly you can't claim any of them are warm hatches. A Golf would be OK, though.

Are you really bothered about depreciation on a £6k car? Even if it loses half its value over 3 years thats only a grand a year?

Keh?

I've seen those stereotypes in 1.2 75bhp Clio's, doesn't mean the 172/182/197/200 aren't hot hatches.

I take it you missed the other thread:rolleyes::) Let's not start it here - I'm just fooling around.

Totally missed the sarcasm.

You have up to 6k to spend and mpg is not an issue. Why not consider something a little more 'all out'
