white men can't jump - black men can't swim?

There's not a lot to swimming, surely any passer by who saw them flailing could just yell "ARMS OUT! KICK SLOW!" and saved them all? I generally float, to such an extend I can lie face up motionless and the water will be just below my eyes.

I think it'd have been hard for them because they'll have been panicking, and I don't think it says whether they all went in together or one after the other - if they went in together, started getting into trouble and were trying to grab on to each other, then floating or doing anything 'useful' (ie something resembling a stroke to help them avoid drowning) would've been pretty impossible.

deleted it as thought it was a bit harsh in the circumstances. But did I say the names were unacceptable? Just that I didn't like them. I don't like the names Max or Chelsea either but doesn't make them unacceptable. Get a life.

I see. I'm very curious as to how you came to the conclusion that I don't have a life.

But would you have pointed out that you didn't like their names if they had been Max or Chelsea?

More racist than making up ridiculous names, despite sharing roughly the same US culture, in order to promote racial division ?
US culture exists only as an amalgamation of all the cultures within her borders. To say they all share "roughly the same" culture is both erroneous and correct I suppose, but they certainly don't "make up names" imo

It's a tough call, given that swimming is arguably a survival skill rather than just a sport like basketball.

Also, whoever complained about the names... Get over yourself. Different cultures use different names. Did you folks know some people even speak different languages? Crazy, I know.

Being a bit of a drama queen there. I get why he was surprised by the names, because they sound so extremely stereotypical. It's not about different languages as these people probably speak English as a first language anyway.

Black people cant swim as fast as white people.

See, that's the funny thing. The old notion goes that black people aren't physiologically and anatomically built for competitive swimming like white people.

I have to agree with it being an expensive sport, and as well it being a minor sport so in all fewer black people would be interested in it. However once you get to near competitive levels then any sport turns expensive, why they seemingly don't apply for scholarships or whatever (in the USA) I don't know.

"My children are never going to learn to swim because I'm scared they would drown."

All I've got for that is "huh", I can't even come up with a rational response. If we dissect it slightly you end up with a statement of "I'm not going to teach my children how to save themselves because they might not be able to" - if you don't have your children learn how to swim then of course if they fall into water they're more likely to drown than if you don't teach them. At least a swimming pool where they are given lessons is a relatively safe environment to find out how good or bad they are at swimming. It's surely better to find out in organised lessons where they can easily be fished out than just trusting to luck that your kids will never end up near a body of water deep enough to drown in?

Aren’t we the lucky ones to have it in our National Curriculum.

Except in Scotland weirdly although both my primary and secondary schools took the pupils swimming so while it's not officially a part of the curriculum it is at least fairly common.

I dont understand why you need to learn to swim, i have always thought it was just something you are born with or you lean naturally (like walking).

Did you never get taught how to swim? You just jumped in the pool one day and you were doing lengths? It's possible to keep yourself afloat and alive probably as long as the water is not moving and you're fairly calm but swimming is almost always an acquired skill.

I'll thank you for showing me that the names are not traditional in their culture or - if they are indeed made up - that it is not traditional in their culture to make up names at a whim.
