What a buy....lol

Unless you have a disaster next season you'll have the pick of just about any manager in the world. Don't think Mourinho will leave Real until he's won the CL so that leaves Pep as the obvious choice.

Would it be all that attractive to the very best managers in the World? It might be but for the manager who starts in the immediate aftermath of Sir Alex leaving they'll almost inevitably suffer by the comparison - if they do poorly then it'll be said it was a huge mistake appointing them, if they do well then it's because of what was left behind for them. You've also got the issue whereby you're losing over a quarter of a century of continuity - that's a long time to imprint yourself on a club and it'll probably take quite a while for any new manager to change that. I think it's slightly different at Real Madrid or Barcelona (even Juventus/AC Milan/Inter Milan) where you don't have anywhere near the same level of continuity to deal with.

I'm not saying you won't find people wanting to test themselves but I wouldn't be all that certain that it's all that attractive a prospect because there's an immense opportunity to fail or at least be underappreciated/unappreciated even if your tenure is relatively speaking a success.

I don't know who the best successor would be but it's certainly going to be interesting when the time comes. Louis Van Gaal might be a reasonable option but at 60 himself he's not likely to offer that much more in the way of longevity.

If Guardiola hadn't left I'd say Mourinho would be approached (if Fergie retires next season), but Guardiola without the huge compensation to get him out of a club is a no brainer I'd imagine. I'd say part of the condition would be Fergie moving upstairs somewhere in the club and Phelan staying, though.

They will need a fall guy as the first manager, someone who they can sack when they fail to keep up with cities spending. Someone to blame, someone cheap. It will be moyes.

I don't understand how people think Moyes is anywhere near the United job, give him a small amount of money and he can buy decent top 6 players, but whenever he has been given large amounts of money to spend he has wasted it on players who have been poor at best(Saha, Yakubu etc.).

Plus if United are going to tempt the type of players to join that they need in order to challenge for the Prem, they need a well recognised, successful manager rather than one who is only known for finishing in the top half regularly.

Guardiola and Mourinho have go to be the favourites, Solskjaer could put his name in the hat if he does well but I can't see United choosing a guy who has only managed for a couple of years..

Without trying to be offensive to Everton they are probably have less of an appeal based on the current potential for European football and winning trophies regularly than Man Utd do - I only point this out to note that while Moyes may not have a great record with larger amounts spent that might be somewhat improved if he had a negotiating position where he could offer more than money as an attraction.

Well Fergie hasn't set the world alight at times with expensive players he has bought. They all have black marks, not every buy is good.

So I will ask how much do you think Everton paid for Saha?

Yak was and always will be a sack of ****. That was a poor buy.

But still the lest of players he brought in that couldve or have been sold for miles more than he paid is much longer.

Fellaini
Cahill
Baines
Lescott
Jag
Arteta
He gets the best out of peinaar when others can't.

Where he fails for me is getting the best out of strikers because he isolates them with the team we have, something he wouldn't have to do at United.

This. Moyes shouldn't (and wont) be anywhere near the list of candidates. When Fergie does retire we'll have our pick of managers, why on earth would we say nah we dont want any of them we want David Moyes :o

A very hard act to follow to be honest.... Moyes or even Harry harry redknapp seems like a good bet. But who knows in the world of football...

Yeah, I've never understood it either.

The thing is when you look at Moyes record in the EPL relative to what he's had to work with it does actually stand up to scrutiny: top 8 finishes in 8 of the past 10 seasons. The 'big four' of Arsenal, MU, Chelsea and Liverpool has now expanded to the 'big 6' including MC and Spurs, a few of those seasons he had a big-spending MON to contend with too.

If you look at net spend since 2003 (http://www.transferleague.co.uk/league-tables/2003-2011.html ) he's only spent £10m, which compares favourably with pretty much everyone except for Wenger. (it also makes you wonder how the hell Everton have managed to bleed the coffers dry!)

Now of course, a club like MU doesn't need to be penny-pinching. But what it does tell you is that Moyes has certainly been a lot better than par for the course during his time at Goodison. Who knows what he could do with more resources and better players at his disposal?

And yes, Moyes has made some bad buys. Andy van der Meyde is the worst dutch international I've seen in the Premiership. But I've never seen a Premiership manager be in charge for a number of years and not have a bad signing.
