Hi all, I am due to have an operation sometime this year to have an circumcision (medical reasons, not preference would rather not mind). Anyway I have to have an general anaesthetic, and this is the first time I have been put out in my life for an op.

I am a bit neverous to be honest, in case something goes wrong while under and I was wondering how many people have had it done on OCUK and was it all plain sailing from being knocked out to waking up in recovery.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Anthony

Twice.

Once for a transplant, once for brain surgey.

The actual anesthetic part was plain sailing I guess, no problems. I remember the doc telling me to count ten and you think yeah right, this wont work on me. I got to 3 :D

Coming round after the transplant was not a good day out, but that's a serious op. But after the brain surgery I was awake and feeling ok (all things considered) after a couple of hours, from first coming round.

I wouldn't worry about it, the anesthetists job is solely to look after that part of you.

Yeah, I've had it several times. Having an endoscopy, having teeth out, having surgery to stop my nosebleeds, having surgery to remove a cyst in my mouth...

Each time I went out like a light, felt nothing, then woke up in recovery. Felt like crap for half a day while I was getting the anaesthetic out of my system, but after that it was all good in the hood.

My little brother had his done around 10 year old - abit "older" than the typical, also due to medical reason. He counted back to 8 and he was out. Woke up feeling hungry and was normal bar the lower region.

And a tip, buy a VERY VERY big T-shirt (or long?), my brother found it useful to walk around the house naked in just a big shirt - preferably red so you cant see the blood stains if rubbed / touched the wound region.

Feeling nervous is natural, i have done for all the times i've been under. As long as your reasonably fit and healthy, you should have no problems. You'll feel like crap when you wake up though, kind of like a really bad hangover but that soon wears off. The doc and anethatist should see you before the surgery anyway just to explain whats happening and to answer any questions you have.

Hope that helps :)

Had it twice - wonderful experience, fully knowing it's gonna knock you right out just there and then. *Bleugh*

One second later 'is that it?'

I felt a pretty strong pain as they put in the needle thing in my hand/s (she had to try it 3 times). But I would guess the pain felt could be much less depending on who is doing it and how much flesh you have on hand.
I then actually felt quite a strong pain when they injected the actual drug into the original needle they had put in my hand. The pain seemed to travel up from the hand to the shoulder, then I guess I passed out.
Waking up, I was very groggy and tbh felt half dead. My throat hurt a lot and was very dry. No amount of drinking seemed to help this.
For a week or two afterward I had a nap during the day quite often.
All in all, you have nothing to fear :) It was all very bearable.

It literally is plain sailing.

I remember the first time the docs pumped the anaesthetic and I remember trying to stay awake then I blinked and I was in the recovery ward.

The next time was different but for the same operation (it's complicated) but I was given the anaesthetic and this time, Mum, doctors and all that were standing around the bed and I was actively talking to them and don't remember passing out and again, just woke up in the recovery ward :)

You honestly have nowt to worry about :)

That sounds worse than my experiences! I'm an anethatists worst nightmare :D

Well I have had it twice in fact. The first time, for a tooth out at Guys in London, was fine. I guess how much they give you has an effect maybe. Still, the 2nd time wasn't that bad. I hope I didn't give that impression :|

Didn't Nick/Kate Phazackerley originally go in for the same op? So many silly mistakes made in the NHS nowadays...

Thanks all, that all helps. Thanks again, much appreciated. I am glad that no-one have asked for pics before and after  :o ( just hope they don't remove the actual organ by mistake :( or if they do replace with a certain female part to keep me amused ;) ).

Been under about 12 times, mainly when i was a kid due to a birthmark with hemangioma i have on my side. Piece of cake really - as mentioned you count to about 3 and then you're under and you wake up feeling like you've just blinked. Mild hangover feeling for a couple of hours maybe after but that's it...

Lets hope all goes well, not to try and scare you but when my old had his done (in his 40's, for medical reasons) something went wrong which caused mass swelling and bruising of his whole lower regions, didn't sound to nice...

You are an idiocratic patient allergic to anesthetic?
Because I would think that's the worst nightmare for them, one standard dose and you end up dead.

Not quite, it's more the heart, lung and other wierd things i have wrong with me that upsets them. I have been known to crash on the table a few times and knowing that worries them i think

Only been under once to have my tonsils removed. I remember saying it would feel a bit weird, but I should count from 10 to 1, so I said to him "Nah, can't be bothered, cheers anyways, good night" and that was it, till I woke up.

It was the waking up bit that was weird, seemed to come around quite quick, then fell back asleep again, then came around again. Was quiet a fun experience tbh lol.

Good luck with the op though dude :).

I have been under twice, both when I was about 8. I remember telling them I never fall asleep that easily, then I woke up in the recovery ward...

I don't remember any problems after the anasthetic but then I was young so have probably forgotten it.

Once, sebaceous cyst on my ear lobe.

Woke up, sore throat from breathing pipe, other than that all good.

When he put mask on to knock me out, I burst out laughing, but was asleep 2 seconds later.
