Who here owns a Renaultsport?

My mate came over today to give me a hand fitting the rear hub spacers/camber shims. They widen the track by a total of 40mm, are a non rotational mass and provide 2 degrees of negative camber. It was apparent from photos and driving, that on hard cornering the wheels did not have a enough camber on the rear. It almost looked like i had positive camber and the tyre wall was getting squashed.

Annoyingly one of my disc spacer/deflectors had a hairline crack in it and when refitting snapped. Getting another one from BTM, until then the car is out of action.

I think i've decided to get rid of the pure motorsport front solid mounts and strut. Despite being an awesome bit of kit, it doesn't provide any camber adjustment on the front and 1 degree just isn't enough. I think i'll be heading towards AST solid top mounts which enable a further 1.4 degrees over standard. Also been looking at either switching to cup wishbones or redrill mine to allow more caster on the front.

That looks an awful lot more than 2deg to me, more like 4-5.

You are right, its 3.5 degrees, 1.5 standard :)

Camber y0!

Could you not just get some camber bolts for the front? They add another 1.5 degrees for £30.

For some reason the max i am able to get is 1.10 degrees WITH camber bolts. No idea why

EDIT: It could possibly be something to do with the pure motorsport kit?

Hello!

Next year I will be contemplating selling my car to help fund a house deposit. I am on the lookout now for a ~£3k car. Something that will be reliable, fun, cheap, but still keep me interested in driving. A Clio Sport has ticked most of the boxes, but I wanted to come into the thread to seek further info.

I have seen this example Clio 182, which I really like, the seats especially sell it for me!

So, what are they like to own? MPG, Tax, Service, Reliability, Tyre Costs etc..

In case some of you don't know, I currently own an 08 Focus ST3. The running costs are fine with this, but I would like my next car to be a little cheaper to run! Especially with a mortgage pending...

Tax is £250 for the year
On a run you can get 40mpg, bit of mixed driving and I get around 34mpg.

Sign up on cliosport and have a read through the buying guide.

Tyre costs aren't too bad. Tyres are 205/45 and Michelin PS3's are £120 a corner.

Biggest cost is probably cambelt, so make sure it's done already at a specialist. Recommended to change the Dephaser pulley (when worn it will rattles on idle) as a precaution. This job is circa £600 and needs to be done every 5 years of 72k miles.

I've had my 182 for almost 2 months now, and although i've spent almost £1500 on it since (belts, dephaser, tyres, disc & pads, oils, filters, etc), i don't think they are that expensive to keep. Belts and dephaser is a renault specialist job so is costly at around £550 - £650, but only needs doing at 72k or 5 years, aux belt is included in that as is engine oil and oil filter, but the aux belt also needs replacing at 36k or 3 years (i think).

Tyres are 205/45/16 for the standard 182 wheels, I had a set of 4 rainsports fitted for £300, but if you want something a bit racer you're probably looking at around £100-£120 per corner. Some opt for 15" wheels, which allows them to fit 195/50/15 tyres which are about half the price plus fitting generally.

Rear brake disc are fairly expensive for what they are, as they include the bearing and ABS rings, but can be bought for around £100-£110 from ranault dealers on ebay. Front disc are fairly cheap in comparison, i opted for the Brembo HC from G172 on the cliosport forum.

The original Exhaust do not last long, and cost around £700 (so i'm told) from renault, so most are fitted with aftermarket stainless systems, which cost around £300-£400, some are quite loud, others not so. I made sure i bought one with a quieter exhaust system.

I'm averaging around 35-37mpg to a full tank at the minute, this is calculated on mileage done versions fuel used, rather than the on board computer. But my commute to work is fairly economical (no motorways though and still rush hour traffic).

Tax is around £250 for 12 months i believe, will find out next month when i get the bill.

I'd definitely recommend you join the cliosport forum, if your interested in the clio, as you'll then be able to see all the for sale threads, guides, etc, but also get discount from the traders once you've got the car.

Thanks for the info so far guys. I'm happy with what I am hearing to be honest, MPG I'm looking north of 35 average. I do 8-10k miles per year so not really a big deal, but would prefer less trips to the fuel station :). Tax is also fine at £250, and the tyre prices seem reasonable.

My budget will probably get me an 04 model with around 60-70k on the clock, so I will look out for one that has already had the cambelt and dephaser job done!

How rare are the models with the Trophy Recaro seats in? They look fantastic and are really making the car appeal to me...

The Recaros were a very rare option on the 182's. Obviously standard on the Trophy. Looking about £900 for the set and they sell quickly ;)

Think the one you linked has started to show some steering wheel melt as well (common). Refurbed wheel is pretty cheap though and there is a top bloke on cliosport that does it.

Darryl has covered most of it. The major expenses are belt services and insurance. If you can find one with the belts recently done then you can avoid that. Insurance is unavoidable really, the image of the car just drags prices up.

The other thing worth mentioning is that while its got Renaultsport underpinnings, large parts of the car are still just cheap French shopping trolley. The plastics are naff, the body panels are half plastic and don't colour match, and the electrics are diabolical.

While the Recaro's are excellent, I wouldn't pay to fit them. I might even be tempted to sell them if I got a car with them.

The French reputation does put me off just slightly, so was coming over here to see if all the bad stories were true...

I'd never really considered running insurance quotes as I thought it would be cheaper than the £420 I am currently paying on the ST. Turns out the little Clio is a tad bit more expensive, but nothing noteworthy really.

Only other cars I have considered so far are MX5 and Civic Sport.

Check insurance quotes with Brentacre, Greenlight and Sky. They are normally very competitive with the clio's.

I've travelled well over your yearly mileage in about 6 months and so far I have had done:

New exhaust (was the old rusty standard system)
New OEM brakes and pads all round (were old and very badly lipped when I bought it)
Two new PS3 tyres (Only had about 3.5-4mm when I bought it)
36k Aux kit Service & gearbox oil change
New Thermostat (took a while to get up to temp)

So pretty much all consumables. Although it might need a new Lambda sensor. Overall, not bad (on 53k miles now).

It's likely I'll be putting my RB 182 up for sale soon which has the optional Recaros and both cup packs

Not sure what to price it at with 92k on it?

There aren't any real major issue, jut lots of niggly things. Like the pretentioner cables under the seats being a dodgy fit so the airbag light comes on if you move the seat. The connector in the rear light cluster is poor so when you brake the fog light indicator on the dash illuminates. When you unlock the car theres a little delay before the motion sensors inside are deactivated, so if you open the door too quickly the alarm goes off. The front wings are plastic while the doors and bonnet are metal so they will be a different colour.

Just random stuff. On the plus side the plastic and galvanised body means rust is practically unheard off.

Oh how I've done that a few times :p

EDIT: Thought I'd share a quick reflection shot after a front end respray and machine polish. Was looking smart, needs a clean now :p
