All you really have to do is know why make of Router you have.
Then, check which Wireless Network you are Connect to.
That will tell you if you are Connected to your's or not.

Mine for example...

Make of Router = Belkin
Wireless Network Connected to = Belkin54g

But if he has changed the network SSID it will say something else.

Matt, you do the following simple check.

On the wireless laptop/computer which you're using atm, go to command prompt and type ipconfig /all
Look for the line called "description" which has the name of your wireless adapter. Take note of the bit which says "physical address" (aka MAC address). It's a bunch of letters and digits seperated by hyphens, so write it down.

Now login to the router's admin control panel and look at the section which lists the connected devices (most routers have this feature for MAC filtering purposes). The MAC address from above should be listed there. That means your wireless adapter is connecting to your own router and not someone else's.

Yes I know, but as he say's he has no idea about Networking, I am 100% he would not have changed the SSID :)

/edit - my ipconfig /all displays a Physical Address which does not match with my...
1)WAN MAC Address
2)LAN MAC Address
3)WLAN Mac Address

So what does this mean?

/editedit - oooops it wasn't matching with them 3 above because they are the Router's MAC address'
I have just gone into "DHCP Client List" and next to my name under "Host Name" it has a matching MAC Address which is the same as the address that was displayed in "Physical Address" from ipconfig /all :)

You never know, his neighbour might have the same brand of router and also didn't change SSID (unlikely, but not impossible). :)

Looking at MAC addresses is a bit more definitive. Having said that, MAC addresses can be spoofed but it's not very likely (well, not from my experience anyway).

I understand where your coming from :)
I do agree, doing your way is making sure he is Connected to the correct Wireless Network.

Surely there is a really easy way to make sure you are conencted to your own router? Load up a web page, and then turn the router off. If you now can't load up the next web page, then you are clearly using the correct router. :D

Lo-Tech answers are often the easiest..... :D

Its not a firewall problem as there isnt one installed as yet. Help..... its driving me crazy

Now you know you are Connected to the Correct Router, it seems you need to put the information into the Router such as settings.

Are you using the Router to access the Internet now to write these posts?
Is it just the PC with the Router connected to it?

ive reverted back to using my old modem for the time being as i cant access the net otherwise, so no i'm not using the router right now. Basically the set up is: Main desktop pc in one room with the router connected to it, then i'm trying to use the laptop on the wireless connection. I never realised it would be this complicated!?!?!?..

thanks for the input...

ok, to sumarise, the laptop recognises the networking/wireless card (DWL-650+).

using IE, i put the IP no in and i can access the router/modem's control settings. in this i have input the username and password for my isp.

when i click connect, it says connecting and then connected. it seems to say connected indefinately, until i disconnect.

i therefore think that i am connecting to my isp.

the final issue is that i cannot get IE or Firefox to access any web pages. i have set "connections" to auto detect LAN settings etc.

it is a D-Link DSL-604+ router/modem and a toshiba satellite pro 4600 on XP Pro.

please help!
