Shorty after sega announced they were abandoning it.... I traded in my ps1 for a dreamcast.

One of the best gaming decisions I ever made. I basically got an upgrade to a next-gen console for free. After the announcement the shops cut the prices of all the games, so I was able to pick up new titles for £10-15.

Just a word of warning for those after a VGA box. Not all gamse support it, so you will need to check what games do.

Dreamcast was the last console I ever owned and I doubt I'll bother with any unless. . .

. . . there is increasing talk of a HD re-release of the first two chapters of Shenmue on next gen consoles, fanning the fire of Shenmue 3 rumours. Can't believe I'm STILL lurking Shenmue fan sites every couple of months

It better happen so I can carry on with my life!

What happens if you try to play an incompatible game? Does it not work at all or will it just display it at a lower resolution?

Black screen or refusal of the DC to boot iirc, not major. I had one (wasn't a Sega one I think) and it had a toggle switch on it to switch to composite for the few non supported games. It is worth it, especially for Shenmue

VGA Box can make make a difference to some games since their native resolutions can be 640x480, very PC-like and unheard of at the time for a console.

Soul Calibur looked amazing through VGA on a classic CRT PC monitor. I also loved playing Phantasy Star Online Via VGA.

Been reading this thread and thinking about when I had a dreamcast a few years back... I never finished shenmue and never owned either sonic. I'm picking up a free SDTV tomorrow, so funk it, I'm go to start trawling eBay for an dreamcast, Shenmue and an RGB! I have Virtua Fighter 3D (well it looks like 3th but I'm guessing it is 3D), in my drawer, is it any good?

Was listening to the RetroGaming Round Up podcast today. They had the Top Ten Dreamcast Games. Some good stuff they was talking about, great DC games you may want to hunt down, it starts from 82:34.

Thats a shame, I sold Shenmue on eBay a few months ago. Had to get rid of some stuff and I hadn't touched the Dreamcast in ages. I did love Virtua Athlete 2k!

tb - team battle. It is one of the finest fighters ever imo, though Soul Calibur is better (imo again). All fighters only come into their own with an evenly marched human opponent though, playing the computer sucks

Still got mine with about 20 games, occasionally bust it out for some console fun. It was the first 128bit console and the first to run GDROM, 1gb CD's.
