Who went from GTX295 to 5970

I have a GTX 295 and cant make my mind up whether to hold off or not for the Fermi.
Who here upgraded from a 295 to a 5970 and what where the performance increases like, I read a couple of posts when they where first released and people lost some FPS in DX10 games and experienced lower Vantage scores when "upgrading" to the 5970.

Help what should I do, I have my money ready and waiting and want DX11 goodness in the next upcomming games.

What I dont want to do is buy a 5970 when there in stock then March NV release there long awaited Fermi because it "might" be better, or will it?

If you want DX11, then get the 5970, who knows when Fermi will be released. Nvidia fans have waited long enough.

I would wait, see if fermi gives the 5970 a run for its money and is not more expensive, if fermi is not as good as expected then you can go for the 5970 as I am positive they will drop dramatically in price when NV launch the new cards, which is apparently less than two months away.

Well the single GPU fermi supposedly being released end March is rumoured to be quicker than the 5870, not the 5970. How much no one really knows. So I think a 5970 would be a safe bet considering the dual gpu Fermi to compete with it, is supposed to come later. However with the power consumption of the single gpu fermi approaching 5970 levels, if may be some time before the high end dual gpu fermi is released if ever. By which time ATI will have a refresh out anyway. So no, I wouldn't bother waiting for fermi.

I actually changed from a GTX295 to a 5870 and couldn't be happier. Its'a almost as fast a 295 which I was sick off. The 295 puts out too much heat, runs twice as hot as the 5870 on idle, and the fan at stock runs at 30% idle, making in noisy (unless you use MSI afterburner or Rivatuner to change the profile) but then the temps go up. Maybe get one of the 5870's instead of a 5970. And you can always add a 2nd one down the road if your board supports crossfire and your finding a single 5870 is not fast enough. 2 5870's are still quicker than a single 5970 and you don't have to worry about overheating vrm's with the 5870 when overclocking. I've read it's a potential problem with trying to clock the 5970 to 5870 speeds and beyond.

I can't really imagine you're struggling with the GTX 295, so I'd wait to see what's around the corner, I know what it's like to get the upgrade bug though, even if it isn't really an much of an upgrade, just something new and shiny lol

I'm in a similar situation (A pair of GTX275s rather than a GTX295), and the way I see it is that ATI's product refresh and fermi are worth waiting for to see which becomes the best price/performance.

I doubt a single chip fermi will be significantly faster (if at all than a GTX295), but it should trade blows, and DX11 will be worth having at some point. Also I expect ATI's 5890 or 5990 will be here before the end of the year, and if the 40nm yields have improved a lot by then, they should be faster, cooler and possibly cheaper than the current selection.

With all these unknown variables I would buy a Radeon 5000 series video card right now and enjoy gaming with the fastest current GPU for gaming, and enjoy an Eyefinity experience. If when GF100 is released, it turns out to offer more than the Radeon HD 5000 series for the factors that matter most to me, then I would sell my Radeon HD 5000 series video card and upgrade to the GF100. If however, it turns out it doesn’t offer what I need, then I would rest happy that I made a good buying decision. Either way, it is still gaming full of win.

This ^^

I'm in 2 minds on this... 5870 would be a sidegrade at best for the most part... the 5970 would be the logical performance upgrade but a lot of money for that path... which in a few months may or may not be possible at a different price point.

The cold, unemotional, sensible thing to do seems to be to sell the 295 while it still can get a premium - unless money is no object - to either fund a 5870 with the idea of either adding a second down the line or selling it on later to move to fermi.

.... I have a XFX 5970 BE - bought on launch day (pre-order admittedly) for £471.
I have eBa*'d my 295 for about £320 (net) and have a better, quieter and cooler card as a result.

Personally, I think now is a difficult time to consider anything other than an ATi - the 5970 is available (you'll need to look hard, but it is launched) but prices are high, whereas Fermi/GF100 is still some time away and with unknown launch specs or pricing. And of course, once it is launched your 295 will be worth less.

You won't be disppointed with the 5970 - I just think you're concerned, as are we all, that if Fermi launches with a spec that rivals the 5970 but for a 5870 price that you'll feel that you paid too much/bought the wrong card!!

im currently a gtx 260 owner, unless they bring out any games where it's just unplayable i cant see me changing anytime soon. personally i would wait untill there are games that require the latest cards as required spec, thats just my opinion though

Man up and make a decision for yourself.

If you really want to play all those DirectX 11 titles that are currently out....oh wait.
