Why am i afraid of heights now and wasn't 3 years ago.

You probably always had the fear, most people probably always have the fear, the thing is when you find out you are a bit afraid of something for the first time, its normally as a kid and it isn't so bad, so you go through with it, face it and essentially fight back the fear.

When you start avoiding things, the fear grows.

IE the first time you go rock climbing, at 12, is the first time you really faced a "heighty" situation, you hadn't dwelt on heights before, so you went up, did your thing and so the fear never really took hold of you.

But when you get to 25, you don't have time to rock climb, just think about it, and every time you think about going rock climbing, you find an excuse, no time, no money, kids, work, etc, etc, and every time you think about it next time you have the added thing of, you haven't been in ages, you haven't faced the fear in ages, you haven't been that high in ages, and the fear isn't constantly being beaten back.

Every time you avoid a situation involving a height, put off doing the gutters a week because of the height involved, you make your fear of heights worse.

Thats pretty much how life goes, the more you avoid things the more you fear them, as a kid, you've rarely avoided much in life yet.

At age 30, you could have avoided anything involving heights for 30 years, made worse each time you avoid something, at age 8, you can't possibly have avoided things for the same amount of time, hence less fear.

Do you think them Broadcast Tower Engineers have Parachutes? Maybe I'm being stupid - but I think I'd feel slightly better if I was wearing a parachute - just incase I fell :p

I used to climb massive trees when I was younger, generally hoon around rock climbing and climbing roofs, now I can't clean the gutters and the missus has to hand the gutter christmas lights up.

I've had to expose myself (hee hee) to heights more as in my job I'm climbing scaffold and mid construction buildings a lot, it's getting better but I have to force myself to do it

My dad used to love rollercoasters and fast rides, he is the reason I love them so much myself

Then one day about 10 years when we went to the fair, he just couldn't handle them anymore and can't go on them due to fear and them making him feel ill

Was a sad day that :(

According to the comments, they don't because they are too 'heavy and cumbersome'. They had serious balls to climb that...

I was reading some things about the fear of flying a while ago. It said that it's common for a child to happily travel by air every year without issue but have a fear of flying by the time they are about 20.

My eldest daughter (now 23) was completely the opposite.
As a teenager she would start crying the morning of the flight and wouldn't stop crying until we landed.
She did have a proper diagnosed phobia of frogs which we got her help with and she used those 2 years of psychiatric techniques to stop her fear of flying.

Oh btw, ;)
