You probably always had the fear, most people probably always have the fear, the thing is when you find out you are a bit afraid of something for the first time, its normally as a kid and it isn't so bad, so you go through with it, face it and essentially fight back the fear.
When you start avoiding things, the fear grows.
IE the first time you go rock climbing, at 12, is the first time you really faced a "heighty" situation, you hadn't dwelt on heights before, so you went up, did your thing and so the fear never really took hold of you.
But when you get to 25, you don't have time to rock climb, just think about it, and every time you think about going rock climbing, you find an excuse, no time, no money, kids, work, etc, etc, and every time you think about it next time you have the added thing of, you haven't been in ages, you haven't faced the fear in ages, you haven't been that high in ages, and the fear isn't constantly being beaten back.
Every time you avoid a situation involving a height, put off doing the gutters a week because of the height involved, you make your fear of heights worse.
Thats pretty much how life goes, the more you avoid things the more you fear them, as a kid, you've rarely avoided much in life yet.
At age 30, you could have avoided anything involving heights for 30 years, made worse each time you avoid something, at age 8, you can't possibly have avoided things for the same amount of time, hence less fear.
