Why are certain types of racism tolerated on here?

If you are. Your comment is absolutely ********.

For those who are saying this and that is not offensive "in my eyes", well yeah, that's through a white mans eyes. Try putting on the other pair of shoes and see it in a different light.

Idiots.

You're wrong there.

These are only words - words cannot be racist. It is the context in which they are used or, more likely, how their usage is perceived that can cause them be construed as racist.

Too many people spend too much time looking for an excuse to be offended instead of just accepting words for what they are - words.

Stan :)

Black - White, race?

What I am trying to say is very few people nowadays are not really bothered what colour a person is. Its just used as an excuse to serve their purpose.

I was called 'tommy' all the time when I lived in Germany for 5 years. I wasn't offended as it was not meant in a derogatory way.

blurr you are comparing apples with oranges when you start comparing 'jock' with '******', but I expect you already realise that.

"Only words"

So ****** isn't racist? Just racist when you use it in a derogatory term? Neither is "***t eyes"? Or "Americoon"? Or "Ching Chong"? Or "Gaijin"?

But surely "***t" isn't offensive as it's only a word?!

I wasn't talking about "Jock". My posts have stemmed from the comment saying it's okay to use "chinkies" as an apt term for "Chinese food".

dude think about the words for a moment - "im going for a chippy". now if its a chinese chippy, then i dont think its terrible to turn it into chinky to keep the pun (from "fish and chip shop" to "chippy") and rhyme going...dont use that one myself but i can kinda see where it comes from.

Honky? what is that in reference to? doesnt seem to connotate with "white", "brit", or even "caucasian"...in which case im guessing its a whole new name which has been made up for some purpose?

Correct.

The word "******" is used by black people when speaking to other black people - surely it can't be racist then. If it isn't racist when black people use it, why does it automatically become racist when other people use it?

Stan :)

Better edit out the sweary fully before a mod wanders in dude.

Hemp Knight, what I meant is, if you haven't experienced racism yourself, you have no bearing on what is an offensive racist term and what isn't.

Hmm, ok.

So does that mean then that you're a Japanese American? If not then how do you have any bearing on whether that's offensive to them or not (going by what you said)?

Or are you meaning that if you've experienced any form of racism (regardless as to what it was) then you can understand what's offensive and what's not?

If it's the second then I have experienced racism (being white I have been called cracker and such) so by your logic that does mean that I have a bearing on what's an offensive racist term, if so I don't see Jap as being one. "Nip" however I do view as an offensive racist term.

Maybe I misunderstood what you meant entirely?

yes but i dont think that wikipedia fully understands the connotations of swapping the word "chippy" for "chinky" in meaning a chinese take-away.

why dont they just call them "take-aways" then instead? its the chinese who actually label them differently i.e"chinese..." which in this case led to a continuation of the slang term "chippy".

id like to know whether you considered this or just have access to wikipedia and follow it without question?

Hell (no offence to Christians) I am glad I can understand comments as they where intended, as I would be offended every day.

I'm Chinese, a British born Chinese. I have Japanese friends who have explained the whole history of the term "Jap" and I can see why in their eyes see it offensive. Hence why I don't use the term "Jap". If you understood the history behind it, i.e. that was the term the Americans used for Japanese POW, then maybe you would see that as offensive. Just like how "Negro, Coons, *******" are offensive to black people as it stems back from slavery.

Nickg I have considered this. I know what you're saying, that the term "Chippy" from your view has stemmed from a mere abbreviation of the a "Chinese chip shop", this however may not be widely known. It seemingly does have two meanings. But why not just say Takeout/Takeaway? as an innocent word could come out offensive to those not in the know. For example calling a Japanese person a "Jap"

You know you've lost an argument when you have to use wikipedia as a 'reliable source'.

I'm not. My argument still stands. Go up to a black person tomorrow and say "Hey how's it going ******?" in an innocent tone and explain to that person afterwards it wasn't an insult.

When I was a child around 6, we called the chippy chinkys, we must have been bloody racists little ********, even though my biggest worry was where my next chocolate bar was coming from.

The Japanese have a cheek being offended by "racist slurs".

A friend of mine was recently working in Japan and said he and his workmates were turned away from most bars they went to with the words "No Gaijin - Gaijin got to Horiday Inn - get dlink Horiday Inn."

I would be very reluctant to take seriously, complaints of racism from a race who practice a form of apartheid in their own country.
