Why are so many people semi-literate?

It is just laziness, everyone learns to write at school. Sorry, I should phrase that in a better way. Everyone has the chance to learn to read, write and spell at school but a lot just cant be bothered because there is more fun to be had by mucking about.

There is little in the way of punishment for anything in this life any more. If you dont want to learn you can just breeze your way through school and sign on.

Its not tricky to learn how to spell. You do not need to know what all the terminology related to grammer and spelling is. As mentioned, you never ever think about putting a noun in the next sentence, you just write.

We should run the american system of holding people back in school if they can't be bothered to ever try to become literate.

Oh and please can people stop writing pedal stool. It just makes you look like a 'tard.

Do you mean Grammar and American, also Don't and Can't without an apostrophe?

I'll ignore the retard malarkey as being intentional.

If you are going to denounce other people and their spelling and grammar, at least make sure your own post is grammatically correct and word perfect. :p

Also what are you referring to when asking people to stop talking about their pedal stools?

it's because people don't read as much these days.

And I don't mean blogs and interweb forum posts. I mean properly written and edited text. We know this for a number of reasons not least the shrinking newspaper readership and other similar factors.

So we're to assume you never use slang and always speak with perfect enunciation?

No, nobody does. Most people don't. Quite right in fact. Why do we ever bother teaching people to read and write if we don't bother to make sure that we are perfect all the time in every way.

Im sure that all of the people that write 'there' instead of 'their' can all write beautifully and are well educated and hard working individuals that tried their very best at school.

There are plenty of people that have genuine difficulty with spelling through no fault of their own. I would be willing to wager that most people who appear to be unable to spell were just not bothered at school.

As with all things that require effort and learning though, we should just make allowances for those that cannot be bothered and make excuses so that we don't offend them.

As someone else said more people write where others will read. Go back just a couple of generations and large portions where illiterate, even go back a few decades and there is a fair number of people who could not read or write. Where I use to work 40 people 3 of them could not write all in there mid to late 40s.

Too much pasty smashing not enough spelling practice me thinks. (yer me thinks)

It has to be something to do with slang as well. Kids these days have terrible talking habits.

That is a problem in itself though isn't it. I thought that most people with half a brain cell realise that different circumstances require different tacts and language. I wouldn't speak to my mum in the same way as a friend. I wouldn't swear at work when a client was there.

A lot of employers complain that the candidates they are getting seem incapable of understanding the difference in language you employ when at work to when they are with friends. Couple that with their illiteracy and you have someone who is largely unemployable.

I hate the attitude in this country that it is always someone else's fault for their own shortcomings. People who earn good money generally work bloody hard for it. People who don't want to work deserve to be left to their own devices.

If you are incapable of something then it is a different matter. If you just don't want to do it then I have no sympathy at all.

Ah, but where do you draw the line. Physical impairment? Proven mental impairment? How do you know whether someone who appears to be quite capble but is just exercising freedom of choice isn't actually suffering from some unknown inherent defect in character/personality/genetics. Suppose that initial 'choice' such as say, not bothering to learn how to spell at school because you want to mess around with your mates instead, eventually does become an actual, ingrained limitation that you could not hope to overcome during the remainder of your lifetime, however hard you wish that you could / hard you try.

Yes I went back and edited my spelling to the best of my abilities.

Iz I missin ur point. Ahh, so because I have spelt something incorrectly you feel that the best way to take part in a discussion about illiteracy is to weight in with some smilies.

Cracking stuff. I think you might have just proved my point. If I spell something incorrectly it will be because I am being lazy. Illiteracy is the inability to read of write. That is not someone who writes something in haste.

I never claimed not to be lazy with my spelling. If I need to write a formal letter or ensure that my spelling and grammer are correct then I can. The inability to read or write tends to come from quite a prolonged period of laziness.

I know its tricky to make a spelling mistake with smilies but communication is so much easier when you use your words.

It is never too late to learn something. If you never make the effort or give up without trying as hard as you can then you have no one to blame but yourself. I think that if someone wants to learn something at any age then they should be encouraged.

Its not an excuse though. If you can learn to read and write when you are a child then you can do it as an adult. It may be harder but everyone has things that are hard for them. You dont suddenly become unable to learn to spell correctly when you hit a certain age.

You may be scared to try but that doesn't mean you can't do it.

Anyway, I really dont care that much if people have some typos in their posts. I do care when people manage to write incoherent trash that takes you twice as long to understand because it sounds like some chav who struggles to string a sentence together without the liberal use of swearing.

Mistakes are just that, mistakes. If your writing is riddled with spelling errors then the chances are, you can't spell.
