Why are so many people semi-literate?

The most recent I've noticed is the use of 'then' in place of 'than'.

That especially irritates the crap out of me. What's even worse is that you've got people in this thread going on about how they try their best to learn at every oppurtunity, yet are extremely butthurt when they get corrected.

If your standard of English is low, and people point it out, why don't you just try better instead of getting really angry about it? I appreciate people have dyslexia, but most of the time it's just lazyness or ignorance. English isn't taught very well at school either, I don't recall ever being taught how to use apostrophes and how to not use them in school, I've just learnt it myself through a lot of reading and putting effort in to my written English.

I'm appalling at hand writing though, I only find my self writing by hand a few times a year, but even before then in school I was never really happy with my handwriting. :p

People type more than they write on paper, I certainly do, easily by a ratio of 10:1.

Typing makes people lazy, you miss an apostrophe here, or spell a word wrong there and it doesn't seem to matter as much, but if you misspell a word wrong when writing then you would probably scribble it out, or tippex or start again!

I blame computers, they make people lazy, people are too used to spelling/grammar checker so when it's not there they don't check themselves.

I disagree, my handwriting in school was just as lazy, if not more than my typing. I always hand wrote as fast as possible to get everything down, making it very hard to read and missing apostrophe's and all sorts, but with the typing it usually underlines a mistake anyway.

You mean "I've just learnt it myself". "My self" implies that you are discussing your self or persona, whereas "myself" is the reflexive :p

It's nothing to do with schooling, it's pure laziness.

Yes, because some people can't have trouble spelling..

i know plenty of people who are pretty well educated yet they can't spells some basic words. it's just a lack of interest.

If I don't have any interest in something, I find it more difficult to learn.

because they're too lazy to remember what they were presumably taught at their school when they were there so they don't know their from there or they're

( or as you normally read on here over & over )

because their to lazy to learn there words when they went their :p

their signifies ownership

there signifies a place

The point is it's very very easy, it's not like it's something hard to do. For example, with maths, you usually have to think, a lot of English "rules" require little to no thinking.

Om nom nom.

1) It's not taught properly in schools.
2) Children today spend less time reading literature and more time on the internet reading things which are not proofread and often full of mistakes.

The spelling and grammar on here, for example, can be absolutely atrocious. If people reading it don't know its wrong then they'll go on reproducing it.
Having it taught properly in schools is only half the issue here.

It is not really the internet that is the problem, it is the users infact my spelling as actually got better from becoming more active, just try and avoid social networking lingo and text speak, when you are start doing that it all goes downhill from then.
I have just realized that I can pretty much type word for word now, because of spending quite a bit on other forums. It is all dependent on what communities you go to, as you will expect you will find more illiterates on Facebook than on forums such as this.

I'm going to chalk it up to people not caring, therefore being too lazy to bother to learn English to at least a decent level. Some people will pick it up slower than others, but that just means they need to spend more time on it, it's not an excuse not learn.
