Why aren't there MOWO (Music of White Origin) awards?

Because black people are a minority, apparently we need to be more aware of their music, but when you look at the charts and see half of it is by black people anyway it does seem pointless.

It should be like African Tribal music or something.

All awards ceremonies are pure rubbish.

Listen to stuff you enjoy - who cares whether it's written by a black, white, oriental or whatever person?

Because today's 'politically correct' society is incredibly hypocritical.

That had crossed my mind. I also wondered if a "MOWO" could actually cause some trouble in some circles.

caff - agree with that mate, can imagine its nice for artists to get something to show for what they've written/performed apart from sales though.

The other thing is - music is not just about the singer, or the music, sometimes it's all about the producer - and they're often not the same colour as the artist.

Because for to long white people have unfairly dominated society, and celebrating those who were suppressed for so long yet have managed to achieve so much is simply correct?

Were those we're 'celebrating' actually suppressed or was it their ancestors?

If we're following your logic; why does it have to be race? Why not class?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Agreed - Also, how do you determine the origin of certain music? I can't think of what current music could be of white origin?

EG: Drum and bass is split down the middle, many of the producers are white while many of the MC's are black...

Agreed, but the only musician I've been glad to see win an award is Roni Size in '97 or '98, purely because he gave back his Mercury Music prize winnings to the community - giving kids the opportunity to spend time in the studio rather than spending their nights on the street.

Heh, about time this came up again for it's annual airing :p

It's clearly nothing to do with the race of the artist, as previous award winners including such famous black people as Eminem, Jamie Cullum, Amy Winehouse, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera...etc

It's called MOBO, because most people think hip-hop, r&b etc is music of black origin, so as a catchy name for an awards ceremony about genres of music like hip-hop, r&b etc they decided to call it the Music of Black Origin awards which conveniently can be condensed to a catchy acronym of MOBO.

On the other hand, Music of White Origin doesn't really mean anything to most people, so even if you had a 'MOWO' awards, you'd have to first pick a bunch of 'white' genres, and collect them all together ending up in a slightly bizarre hotchpotch of genres, so it's quite likely people wouldn't be interested in any event.

Because black music is rubbish and needs its own recognition rather than the BRIT awards.

No coincidence MJ went from black to white.

Disclaimer black singers are bloody greet.
