Why do Graphics card prices in UK suck so bad?

Hardware is different to software. For hardware you can account for the difference in prices due to VAT and consumer law.

I think the main thing is, the GTX 680 have sold very well at the prices they were at - the Palit ones were selling for £399 if you got one in time and when you sell your old graphics card your not actually paying £400 to £450, some people save up months in advance to do their upgrades.

Best thing is to just wait a few months till their is enough stock to go around.

Why?

Exchange rates, various taxes, including on imports, few significant retailers, relatively small market, shipping costs, higher running costs (minimum wage, distribution), few, if any, domestic distributors, rich customers not minding to be ripped off, etc.

Oh, and as Halk mentioned, consumer law that effectively increases costs in the long distance - DSR, warranties and a few other issues.

Its equally bad throughout europe though, not just the UK. My girlfriend is from Bulgaria and she checked a few well known companies from back home for graphics card prices and a 580GTX is £600 on some stores over there due to supply and demand issues. The cheapest 7970 I could find was £433 if you convert levs to pounds which is pretty much identical to our prices. Some however are 400 lev more, pushing the price over £500 each :S

The average wage in America is less so they pay less for the majority of things, other than health insurance. Therefore the price for graphics card is cheaper in the US because their average wage is less.

Where are you finding GTX 680's for 500 dollars? :D

The average salary in the US is $41673 or neatly converted into £26,000.....the average wage in the Uk is £26,400.....allthough if you live down south or in/around London thats considered a low wage and is more like £40,000+ average.

you're kidding right

the average wage around here is 5 to 8 quid an hour, if you're earning 26 grand a year you're well off.

Hmm, £40k seems a bit on the high side, I would think.

Seen the property prices in Battersea and Clapham?

£40k you wouldn't even be able to afford to rent a one bedroom flat per annum.

And inner city like Mayfair and all that? it's a joke.

Last time I looked (2008) a 2 bed flat in Streatham (under Brixton right on the outskirts) was around a grand a month.

However, take that to Battersea? more like a grand a week. And with 52 weeks in the year..

I've got a couple of friends who live in Battersea and Clapham and they simply rent flats with other people their age. Mate of mine pays £500 a week just to live in a four bed house with three other people !

Averages are a pretty poor stat to use with wages as the upper end of the scale has a massive distorting affect.

Median is a better stat to use to show what the majority actually earn.

You can see on this the difference on this link
look at the Income distribution across age bands (note the data is old)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Income_in_the_United_Kingdom

And as has been mentioned, people in london on lower wages live with others on lower wages or in social housing.

Yeah its a poor example to give averages, as it depends where you live in London.....if you live in say Chiswick, Chelsea etc then the avergae wage is much higher than say if you live in Brixton or West Ham.

The same probably rings true for City folk who live in central New York, in comparison to people who live out in the country.

But living in rip off Britian does give you great a oppourtunity to make money using the free EU trading laws......you can buy kit from Europe at heavily discounted rates and sell it for UK prices and make great margin. :)
