Why Do We Need Sleep?

It is mental that if we are sleep deprived very very weird stuff happens.

i once staid up 4 nights with no sleep (with the help of some white powder). you are right. very weird things were happening by the 4th day ;)

OP: i think its more a mental thing than anything. your brain is massively active when asleep. its like your brain needs to dream.

i regularly didnt sleep from thursday --> sunday when i was a bit of a party animal but now im 37 im constantly tired from not enough sleep due to baby.

i think as you get older you need more sleep again.

sleep = the equivalent of when 7 of 9 regenerates herself. Boy would I love to regenerate her, even if she is a Borg. **Geek mode off**

So sleep = Body going into maintenance mode. Or according to my religion when the spirits take your good and bad deeds up to God. Spooky stuff.

Sharks don't sleep, nor can get cancer.

Random facts I remember from way back.

If we only know how and transfer it across!

dont they shut down half their brain at a time? lots of animals do this. for example birds IIRC. they can fly and half the brain is asleep. then it switches over to the other half. to be honest i often feel like half my brain is asleep ;)

so, you can be bad one day and not sleep and he never finds out? :)

There's only a certain amount of hours in a day i can deal with conscious life and the general muppets that it contains. Sleep is my friend.

I wonder what the world would be like if nobody needed to sleep. Like if we just maintained ourselves by eating and drinking. What differences would there be in society?

No, why do we have them?

Seriously? Ok, I'll bite.

Tides are the result of the moon and suns gravitational pull on the earth. As water is mobile on the planet it will get pulled towards the moon/sun as it moves around the earth. When the moon and sun align you get "psring tides" - i.e higher or lower tides. Also when the moon is nearer the earth you get larger tides.

Seasons are the result of the Earths orbit around the sun and specifically it's relative inclination to the sun - i.e. in summer in the northern hemisphere the earths tilt relative to the sun exposes it to more of the suns rays, warming the seas and land. In winter in the northern hemisphere, the earth tilts away from the sun, resulting in less exposure to the sun and a cooling of the sea and land. The above is also why places like Australia and New zealand have the opposite of the northern hemisphere - i.e. why the Aussies are sat out side in shorts having a bbq at xmas and why the New Zealanders are all off skiing in August :-)

EDIT - just seen your replay to the other post (which was much more succint than mine btw!)

Why do we need mavity, the moon, the sun and the northern and southern hemispheres though?

WTF? Why does there have to be a NEED for anything? That's just the way it is. Or are you implying that it's some kind of intelligent design? In which case "lololololol!".

I may have just imagined this but if you practice it (something to with Buddhism and meditation) you can get down to needing about 4 hours sleep and be more than healthy?

Or did I imagine that last time I was sleep derived? :p

I love doing 3 day stints with no sleep when a new MMO comes out, I start hallucinating and I become rather funny and more talkative.
