Why do you think people feel the need to change others?

Because we would have a lot of problems if we just let people get on with things without any sort of logic or reason behind it. What is education. Why do people ask a question on a forum if they dont want someone else's opinion.

What if someone tells you that the best phone in the world is the nokia 3310 when you ask what phone you should get. Ooh, I know hes talking out of his arse but I dont want to explain why.

Plus it then gives all the anti-keyboard warriors the opportunity to feel smug and superior when they question whether a posted would be so brash if confronted in person. Anyway, think about how many idiots you meet in the real world every day. There is a good chance that a lot of the people on here are just as idiotic in real life.

Makes the internet go round.

I think Hannah Whitall Smith said it best - "The true secret of giving advice is, after you have honestly given it, to be perfectly indifferent whether it is taken or not, and never persist in trying to set people right.".

As for why people tend to do it, I'd suspect a great deal stems from a desire to validate your own choices, rather than acknowledge that there may be a good reason (or even a bad reason) why something else is an acceptable choice for others the answer may seem to be to go on the offensive about what you yourself have picked and therefore why anything else means that the other person has made a stupid choice.

In the CPU section it's AMD vs. Intel

AMD is better than intel in the price range most people are looking at

In the Console section it's 360 vs. PS3

PS3 is better

Religious threads, Believers of faith vs. None believers, these threads go on for pages with people who don't believe telling believers they're wrong and stupid, and believers delivering the same in return.

Ummm... Don't know what to say... I think Jedi is incorrect

There's lots of other little "wars" going on, Mac lovers vs. PC lovers, Android fans and Iphone Fans, Nvidia vs. ATI.

Mac is for video producers and people who are unable to install a virus checker. For everyone else, there's PC. Iphone if you want to be cool. Android if you want to be different. And Nvidia at the moment.

Anyone who disagrees with me is a plonker.

Next question?

OP, I did see a program on this..well sort of. It was called something like "why do men like sport" I feel this is pretty much the same thing. Men (people) who grow up on their own. (welcome to an I.T forum!) grow up with a feeling of not being ‘apart’ of something. So when they get to their teen years, they start to look for something they can be apart of. Something where they feel apart of a ‘group’ This is normally sport. Football (for e.g) can be very aggressive for the fans. “MY TEAMS BETTER THAN YOUR TEAM!” They feel like they can have some ones back/some one have their back. This makes them apart of something…
However… this is my theory. All the above is correct.. but this is 2010! Computers are a major part of our lives. I feel these people who would have got obsessed in sport 20 years ago are now latching onto xbox’s, intel etc. This is VERY visible on youtube. Search ‘ps3 move’ and find a video. I guarantee you’ll find what’s called a ’fan boy’ arguing how much better a 360 is compared to a ps3 (even tho no ones asked for his opion. Yet being apart of something obsessively will make that person NEED to point out that ‘His team is better than your team’. I remember once seeing something like “Well you’re just jealous because we have an update that allows for 3d in November! While were playing in 3d enjoy your kinect you *** < f word for gay people”

If some one says to me “Do you like Cake? I LOVE CAKE” I would say something like “Im not a fan of cake.” While these people will say “WTF?! YOU ‘W’ HOW CAN YOU NOT LIKE CAKE U D**K!”
This is obviously a sign of lack of people skills and communication abilities (also showing from where they grew up alone with no practice of communicating with others and/or being able to hold a constructive conversation) backs up the TV shows theory.

P.s i Also feel this is why you get emo's, goths and people who hide behind 'tags'. people who LOVE to say "I have OCD!" or "Im depressed!" Every 5 mins.... that can also be attention seeking.

No idea OP, but for some reason it reminded me of those TV programmes where they find someone a selection of houses to their requirements, yet nearly always find them houses way beyond their budget. Why?

Some interesting points put forward, I like the team\sports reasoning :p Internet culture plays a big part in this too, What would have been teams and a school yards, has become all viewpoint in life and forums!

And G-man2004, Funny you should say that, I mentioned this literally a week ago to my brother. The couple say, we'd like to spend £250,000 on a new home please, and then they show them a gorgeous home, get them to love it, and at the guess the price bit at the end. "Yours for just £320,000" ....Yeah thanks for that!! not

also, I'd try and avoid giving a real response to post #24 as it could turn this thread into the mother hybrid of all fanboy wars :D

Ummm... well at least I was very careful not to annoy the religious/non-religious

And in response to the OP, I always find it fun to mock my friends who play Modern Warfare 2... It's more of a joke and exchange of what we consider witty comments... Just for fun. Arguements/debates about some things are just pointless and more out of spite or to make you feel like you're right. I guess if someone is criticising something you like, you feel the need to defend it/yourself

It's the same reason BMW cars are the superior motor vehicle for driving enjoyment and all round bodacity. Everything else should just step to one side.

Nice sarcasm the problem is in Motors some select forum users actually believe this.

So its just coincedence when you get three members posting within a second they all happen to be normal members of the motors bmw clique ? You would see where im coming from if you werent biased.

There just happens to be quite a few people with the same car, thats all. Don't read too much into things - its only the internet.

Besides, every time you've asked me anything in the past few months I've been polite and accomodating, right?

If someone disagrees with you they're likely to do inconvenient things at some point. If you can correct their thinking such that they now agree with you, or have them correct yours, they'll be less bother in the long run. It's quite good reasoning when dealing with people in small social groups. Doesn't work very well on the internet, as we don't have any significant effect on each other and the group is quite large.

For example, my girlfriend keeps on leaving the hob on whenever she's finished cooking. In the near future, there will be arguments about electricity bills and whether my computer or her absentmindedness is the cause. If I can stop her leaving the hob on now, the future argument will never occur.

I think it's important to change yourself when you're demonstrated to be in the wrong, but that's harder to do than arguing your point regardless.
