Why does the US election get so much coverage over here?

I understand it may be of interest to some because of our close alliance with the USA (and also because we don't trust them an inch).

What annoyed me this morning on Radio One is that following the main news story of McCain 'bulging his eyes' during a debate, there then followed an 'in other news' story about a UK soldier being killed in an Afghan blast.

I find it quite upsetting that our brave heroes are considered second best.

Because Obama's cult of personality has infected the UK population too, despite nobody here actually knowing what his policies are or where he stands on a number of issues.

Simply put, the outcome of the next US election is massively more important to the UK than whether some guy died in Afghanistan
