Why i dont buy PC games online

Despite living in a village, i get quite good speeds. On an "up to 8mbps" and i normally get 6 -7. Whats funny is i can get a faster upload speed using the internet on my phone lol. I get around 0.3mbps on my broadband. Using my phone the other day, with about 2/3 full 3g / 3.5g? signal, i managed 0.4mpbs :/

I have been having the same problems as you with my download speed recently but i am with bt.

If you use any from of p2p in peak time your connection gets extreamly throttled according to them.

They also said steam is counted as p2p which i have never had problems with before.

This is what they told me

If you are using any form of P2P software, then speed is restriced to a maximum of about 35 kiloBytes/s during the hours of 17:00 - 23:59 Monday to Friday, and about 09:00-2359 Sat and Sun.

It does not matter how fast you broadband connection is.

On the steam website technical info.

"Known Issues with Internet Service Providers (ISPs)
Important:

If you notice that your Steam connection only has issues during certain hours of the day (usually in the evenings between 5pm and 11pm), it is probable that your ISP is blocking or "shaping" your connection. Please test your connection at other hours of the day and contact your ISP directly if you believe this is causing the connection issue."

Steam does use P2P, it says on their website.

664Kbps is utterly horrendous for an 8Mb package in this day and age, how far away is your local exchange?

Downloading at 60KB/s must be incredibly annoying.

Edit - some people in this thread are confusing Kbps with KB/s - he's getting about 0.6Mb on an 8Mb connection, he's not getting 660KB/s downloading, it's about ten times slower than that.

I thought the same
Under 1Mb.

Its worth pointing out that the Blizzard Download Manager is awful, and I always download patches manually. I can never get it to stop saying "Your computer appears to be behind a firewall" and downloading at 50k/sec, despite not having a firewall either software, hardware or on the router, and having opened and forwarded all necessary ports.

Your DL speed it still too low, though.

Edit 2: ProTip - fully star out swearies in your posts. Inserting random exclamation marks to bypass the cuss filter will get you banned.

yes, im sorry about that everyone i was a bit angry last night :o

on a different note heres a new speed test

I was just about to ask your location, as I'm not all that far from you.

Your problem is that you're stuck in the middle of nowhere, with no decent exchange nearby, and you're probably as far from the exchange as its' possible to be. I'd warrant the exchange is probably somewhere just outside the Jet garage....

As mentioned, try your connection at different times, see if that makes a difference. That would explain the Steam slowness, but not the speed tests indicating just over 0.5Mb/s line speed. Still, I used to have 512K broadband, it beat the pants off 56k :p

If every time of day is the same, gripe to BT. See if you can get them to do noise tests on your line, (to see if there is excessive noise) and see if there are any plans to upgrade your exchange in the near future.

Add yes, massive DL's when there is perfectly good game content on disk is just madness, no matter how fast your ADSL is!

iv had bt m8 its just as crap and £10 per month more

iv just been on the phone to a friends dad who asked if i had a crackly phone (his words not mine :p) which i do, he said this could indicate that there is something physically wrong with my line

any thoughts

Crackly phone could be lack of filters, filters not in the correct place, or where the main phone line comes in its been tampered with so the filter cannot be placed actually 'at' the source to make the best effect.

Or you just had a wireless phone :p

With regards to the download speed...It says 'upto' for a reason sadly..but its still a naff speed for what should be atleast over 2 meg.

Have you tried O2? I live 'in the sticks' and the only broadband i can get is O2...but on BT Open reach.

hello, i was with sky a year ago, as they didnt have equipment installed in my exchange i was on the sky connect package, it was terrible, at peak times you couldnt even watch a simple video on youtube, i just switched providers to bt because they could offer me a much better speed that works well all through the day, all i can say to you is switch isps because sky connect is terrible

^^ what he said. OP you are most likely on sky connect package...in other words the 7th circle of HELL . Sky connect customers are on BT equipment at the exchange so essentially whenever you need sky to do something sky have to go through BT....and BT prioritize their own customers broadband speeds and maintenance. This is probably why your speeds suck all the time. Throttling is going on at some level.

cheers Kenai and thanks for your time everyone i appreciate it

sorry im getting tired of cropping images

You forgot the quotes around the path in the run command :)

Also, alt-prnt-screen will let you screenshot just the window that's in focus (is just the error message)

:)

Indeed

As I said...I use the O2 Access broadband, as i'm stuck in the middle of nowhere :p

Basically goes through BT, but i've never had an issue really other than the line not being plugged in at the exchange at the start :p

if u got sky tv and broadband unplug the line going in to your sky tv box and watch your internet fly . Them sky didgi boxes are a right hog !
