Why i dont buy PC games online

I had the same issue and kind of still do as my internet connection is really bad.

I got some really good advice on these very forums. Basically I got a broadband accelerator and updated the firmware on my router. managed to double my speed, though it is still a lot worse than yours. :)

78 hours is a lie as I downloaded BC2 in 14 hours at 174Kbps.

Your getting confused. Your line is more than 4 times faster than the OP's ;)

If you remove the faceplate from your Master phone socket, in behind it there is another socket

If you go to this socket and it improves your connection, there is something in your house slowing it down etc..

Not all problems are outside the house. In fact 98% are inside

Except when your line is too long etc.. but thats not a fault really

Well it could be because he's using it in an extension that goes around the house and goes to another phone socket in the house :p

But as you said above really, dont know unless you try

For steam to d/l faster, i normally do this:

1. change the download country.

2. Exit steam, then goto the steam program folder, and delete the 'Clientregistry.blob' file.

Restart steam.

This stopped me getting 60kb/s (one of their uk servers always gives me this), i now download from japan at 250kb/s (my max speed :D)

i like buying games online :D

pings a bit slow today! (normally 10) :o

how come your upload is not that much more yet your download is like 20 times more?

i tried taken this off just to have a look but it all looks pretty new, any idea what the resistor is for?

can i only multiquote 3 quotes ?

i normally use one of those things that lets your connection go through the wall which is about 10 times faster than the wireless too. my computer isn't the slowest in the house

before anybody says. mine was the only comp on in the house when i done the speed test

also sorry about the delay people i appreciate all of the replies i have been checking the posts but didn't have time to give a reply

i have done a few more tests and my line speed does change substantially. i managed to get a measure of nearly 4mb/s which was giving me about 350kb/s download (sorry if this is the wrong unit) this was really late though, near 3am

does this ^^ mean that my isp is to blame and not the hardware?

thanks again for all of the replies people i appreciate it :D

I was just about to ask your location, as I'm not all that far from you.

Your problem is that you're stuck in the middle of nowhere, with no decent exchange nearby, and you're probably as far from the exchange as its' possible to be. I'd warrant the exchange is probably somewhere just outside the Jet garage....

hi matt, i think the exchange is where wheatley hill joins thornley, opposite the school.

where abouts around durham are you from?

You forgot the quotes around the path in the run command :)

Also, alt-prnt-screen will let you screenshot just the window that's in focus (is just the error message)

:)

nice tip cheers uv :D

wow is a terrible thing to try and compare. im on talktalk who heavily throttle P2P but via torrent software i can download wow patches much faster than using the warcraft downloader.
i must admit ive never faffed around with ports on my router but cant see why one is pretty fast and wow's is crap.
steam on teh other hand for instance, i can download at decent speeds

I bought a BT Broadband Accelerator (I-Plate) last week and it has doubled my internet speed. I also squeezed another 60KB/s by installing custom firmware for my router.

I know can download at 380KB/s. This is ok to download from steam with, for some reason steam says I download at 600KB/s, I presume this is a steam bug?

I've found that too with the BT accelerator socket although I've went one step further and disconnected all of the cables in the phone sockets in the house except cables 2 and 5 (the only ones you actually need) and gotten an even faster connection speed and more importantly it's rock solid which wasn't the case before (would disconnect whenever anyone called the phone.) Wouldn't have helped that my house has 5 extensions into almost every room :p

hhmm may give that a try soon

Don't blame the pc, blame the copper wire connecting you around the world.

Just to rub salt in the wound and hopefulyl prompt you to look for a better net connection my stats are 8.2mb down 0.68 mb up.

Giving me around 1.2mb/ps download. :)

You would never get 1.2Mbps on an 8Mb line. The most you would get is 800KBps which is equivilant to 0.8Mbps.

Like another poster mentioned, a lot of people don't seem to realise the different between "KBps" and "Kbps" If the "B" is capitalised it means it's in bytes where as if it's not capitalised it's bits.

The speed you are getting is terrible, you are only receiving half a meg, compared to the guideline of 8. 16 times slower than quoted. The term "upto" does play a big part in it, no one is guaranteed the full 8. I would suggest connecting your router directly into your master phone socket and re testing your connection from a more reputable speed test. Make sure no other downloads or uploads are taking place, close all file sharing programmes etc. Sometimes more often than not connecting routers to extension phone lines can cause dramatic loss in data packets.
