Hi all,

I have played a few dvd's now and get these horrible verticle lines, games and videos downloaded from xbox live look perfect. Its really bugging me and i could do with finding out if the 360 is faulty so i can return it ASAP, My old xbox 1 never had any probs using the xbox dvd player or XBMC.

Please download/watch the video yourself and see what you think.

The 360 is connected to a Dell W2600 (HD ready) via the standard Microsoft HD cable.

HHHEEEEELLLLPPPP!!!!

Do you mean horizontal lines? As I see no vertical lines.

It could be a monitor problem, the 360 is generally not brilliant at displaying DVDs, and the DVD playback uses 480p I believe.

Doh yes :p

I could take it a mates to try on their tv i suppose, i'm wondering if anyone else has had similar probs :)

I have exactly the same screen and exactly the same problem as you describe. No idea what is causing it, but it only does it on the HD feed from the 360. I have an Official VGA cable that I'm gonna try to see if that makes any difference to the DVD playback.

Yeah will do. Have had the cable a while, just haven't gotten around to trying it yet!

VGA cables mean 640x480 DVD playback :(

Might still be better than the garbage picture we have right now!

Saying that, the odd thing is I watched Monsters Inc. on the 360 the other day... no issues what so ever. As soon as I watch a "real life" DVD, I get black banding. It even did it pretty badly on the Lee Evans DVD, and that has virtually no colour changing.

Word of warning: if you switch to a VGA cable you'll be stuck with 640x480 playback... which ain't pretty :(

The HD Composite cable plays at 480p, which is the same. I believe anyway.

If you have a HDTV you should really be using an upscaling DVD player to be honest.....or xbox1 with XBMC which does the same thing.

The first option would require more money, the second would required illegaly modifying an original Xbox and purchasing the component cable.

The 360 should be perfectly capable.

depends how good you want the picture to be.

If its occasional kids use then fair enough, but if it was your main viewing platform its well worth it, as the picture difference is quite considerable with movies - far more considerable than it is with games in fact - and neither option is expensive considering the outlay on the screen.

from the all the FAQs i have seen on the 360, they all state that even though with the 360's immense power it has crap dvd play back, i would if i was you invest in a progressive scan dvd player, they are very cheap nowadays.
