Why it's good to have spares...new video card time :(

I would say you've made the best choice as the 5870 at £200 is a really good deal plus even though it's end of the line it should be fine for 2-3 years at least considerings pcs aren't being fully utilised majority of the time in games.

I got a 5870 myself, great card and never had any issues.(also it's a huge upgrade compared to your old card :p )

Hehe - I can't keep up with any of the PC Hardware, so I don't think I've really done too badly :)

The better option would have been to buy the current GEN unless buying used for a bargain.

There is a guy in MM trying to sell a 5850 for 120 and its not selling.

The 5 series is no longer a desirable card so therefore will plummet in price.

The 6870 would have been the better option for the same outlay imo.For all the things I mention.

Biggest issue I have with PC Hardware, is just how quickly it goes out of date! But that's the way it is really.

I'm mainly an RPG Gamer, or MMORPG gamer, they don't tend to come out more than once a year. Used to be into FPS games - and I'm sure I used to have to upgrade more back in those days!

It was painful when Guild Wars went down to 10fps in Ashford Abbey and when I had to significantly drop my quality settings on New Vegas - I think my temporary 7950GT doesn't do higher resolutions very well - and I run at 1600x900 with the highest possible quality settings.

Yeah true also has the option to go CF which 6870s do really really well....even 6850s in CF are very powerful. You can always change your order, just send a webnote and ask if you can change if you want to.(i would myself)

Its a good card but its dead tech.

Does this really matter??

The 5870 is faster than the 6870 and when Overclocked it will be even more faster than the 6870.

Old tech or new tech its dosent really mater,AMD will not be stopping support for one of there best cards ever made just just yet

No i still think the 5870 is best card choice but if he was considering CF then the 6870/6850 would be a no brainer that's why i said that and i would go CF hence why i would change it. :p

I think it does. Its never a good idea buying dead tech. When you can buy brand new gen for the same outlay.

The difference in speed is marginal and the xfire scaling in the 6 series is better. Plus its cooler quiter and uses less power.

Resale will be higher too. If he decides to upgrade say in a years time. It always makes sense to buy current GEN if the speeds differences over last GEN are not that great.

It looks like when compared, the 6870 has a higher clock speed in certain cases, but still falls down on the Processing Cores, where the 5870 does have over 1600 compared with the 6870 which has 1100.

You have all made fair comments, but I think I'm going to stick to my Guns here, and go with the 5870. I don't have a Crossfire Motherboard, and my PSU is only 600w.

I don't plan to upgrade any time soon and I don't tend to overclock either. I don't normally sell PC components and just run them until they're worth next to nothing, I'm buying with the full intention that if or when I do eventually upgrade, I'll only get £25-£50 for the Card, if I'm lucky.

Perhaps I'm missing out on a few things by going for the 5870 and perhaps it was a spur of the moment purchase, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over going for the older 5-series as opposed to the newer 6-series.

Which highlights just how efficient the 6870 is

600w is fine or xfire 6870

Good choice with the 5870, faster than the 6870 even though it's clocked lower, EOL tech comes around every 12 months in the GFX industry so just buy what's best priced and gives the best performance now.
