Why not to buy a pre-built PC from a major company.

Everything here is weird. An HP PC with no fan on a non-standard hsf plus a vcore that's nuts. Plus this PC which is tittering on the brink of throttling given its temps has not been reported as doing so even when playing MW2 on a gpu that shouldn't even be able to hit double figure frame rates with that game. What res is the monitor 800x600 ?

Supposedly similar to a 9500GT which can run MW2 quite hapily on medium at 1440x900. It's not a demanding game.

It's actually managing to run MW2 on low-medium settings at 1920x1080 :p

Can do Black Ops on low settings too (Just)....

Anyway.....

Yeah, no access to the BIOS to change voltages either....

Computer is clearly not happy being over volted to death....

So warranty people, warranty, contact hp or?

Can you not just go into the BIOS and reduce the voltage?

"Mummy, I want an upgrade"
"Why Johnny?"
"..because the CPU temps are high when I run Prime95"
"That's a poor reason. Go to your room"
"MUM!!!" *stamps feet*

Although I've only ever bought a single pre-built machine (in fact I've only ever owned 3 machines!) I had nothing but good things to say.

I got a top of the line HP Pavilion build in 2001/2 (i think it was) and it lasted me until march last year!!! That's 8-9 years :D All it needed was a small graphics upgrade in 2008 from the 9200 it came with to a second hand HD1950x lol.
Never had any issues with it at all.

It still works! I have M2:total war installed on it (running medium graphics) for when the missus is 'busy' on my main one lol and for LAN battles in older games.

The only reason I have a new one was that it reached it's peak upgrade-wise - the MB was pre-775 and it was using AGP not PCI lol. And I wanted to customise and fancied building my own for a change lol - oh, and it was cheaper :P

So yeah, I had no qualms.

^^ Looks like you did quite well then.

My dad had a Packard Bell a few years ago. The PSU blew taking out the Mobo, CPU, HDD, etc. They wouldn't fix it under warranty cos I'd added a network card to the solitary spare PCI slot!

I would complain about the vcore of the CPU and try get some free stuff or a new machine which you could then flog.

It looks like they have set the vcore to the ram voltage setting, just go on about how it will decrease the life of the CPU. Intel must state these big company's stay within the limits, why is it just not set to its VID anyway.

Anyway you should do something, tell them its blatant they are trying to reduce to lifespan of the machine.

My Dell XPS 420 was incompatible with every cooler on the market that wasn't built by Dell.

Out of curiosity as I've also got a 420, did you find any cooler that was compatible? Before I OC I want to change the cooler on mine and any advice/tips from someone who has or had the same system would be a bonus.

I'll say this once more before you go off to harass HP.

Cpuz tells you it's at 1.6V. Cpuz does get things wrong occasionally. This is not an overclocking board, so people writing cpuz wont have paid that much attention to it. So it's very plausible that cpuz has got the voltage wrong.

my mum has a hp pc from none other than the purple shirt brigade and just checked the vcore is at 2.23v is that right? i run my i5 at 1.3v so i dont get it? lol ninja edit

I remember trying to convince my dad and step mum to let me build a pc when I was 15 because it would be better and cheaper than buying a pre-made one.. but no, they went ahead and bought a "time" one... it only lasted a few months before it popped...

Ok, so here we go. I've been delving into the depths of the PC that my parents bought me a year and a half ago, and that hence I can't convince them to let me upgrade yet.... Aiming for summer hopefully...

Anyway, started to run some monitoring software, see how it worked out...

I've made my own judgements on how appallingly these things have been put together, but I'll let you judge when you see the picture. At the time, it was the top of the range HP media PC....

If anything this has convinced me more and more, that I must convince the parents to let me build my next pc....

Anyway, make your own judgement, Anyway here we go... this is after 5 Minutes of p95

I'd also point out I've managed to get the GPU up to 71C after 2 games of MW2....

Absolutely shocking xD

In some ways I actually think this computer was built to die. I'm also sure they've never actually done a stability test of this.....

Anyway, thought this would provide some giggles :)

Pre-built PC's are designed to die or simply fade away when the warranty runs out and over-volting is one way of making sure sure it does so they can sell you a new one. Ever heard of the "Kill Switch" fiasco?

On the bright side, it shows how strong and solid the I7 920's are. :D
