Why shouldn't I get a SEAT ibiza cupra?

I've been driving for just over 3 months now, i'm 20. My first car being a golf mk2 16v. After 3 months i'm already a little bored of the power. It handles great and i love how heavy all the controls are etc. But after seeing some of these cupras about I want one badly. They are understated and have loads of tuning potential. Obviously insurance will be a bit of a killer, but it is possible. So do you think I should get one?

If there was any reason to avoid it (other than financial reasons) then thats it there. Moving to a quicker car because your bored of your current one after just 3 months is a recipe for disaster imo. I could be wrong and you may well be a bit of a god behind the wheel but looking back to when I had been driving 3 months I had neither the skill or self control to be looking for a quicker car and I only drove a 1.5 Hyundai Pony

Personally I'd leave it until you have a years experience and importantly NCD under your belt then look at the situation again.

If you can afford it then why not, as long as your sensible and don't keep your foot to the floor all the time.

I know how you feel though, I'm looking at getting a MX-5 1.8iS at 19 and I do wonder if it's going to be a bit to much. Just be sensible!

The leon is a completely and utterly steaming pile of poopoo though, the good ones i'd have over an ibiza, but thats not saying much.

Ibiza's are boring little plain hatchbacks which look the same as every other boring little plain souless hatchback, its engine is ok, but thats about it.

Thats the reason i'd give for not getting one, as per the original question :)

the ones based on the mk3 golf too?

At the very real risk of patronising you i'd offer this advice. For at least a year stick with a pretty underpowered, nicely dented is better, basic car. You'll make most mistakes in your first year of solo driving and spending loads of money on insurance and tuning will be a waste.

When i started driving in 1996 i could insure a 1.0l (remember that engine size) fiesta fully comp for about £600 if i remember right. I dinged it in car parks a few times, bent a few steelies (again when alloys were only found on mercs), and generally loved it to bits.

I know better than most the urge to get a decent car but i'm happy i learnt road sense in cheap runabouts before i jumped into 2.0l and above performance cars. TBH i'd probably be dead. This is gonna sound like a boring parents advice but looking back it genuinely is good advice. Stick with the golf, it's only 12months. :)

Thanks for all the replies :D One part of me says wait another year for the ncb (fingers crossed). Trouble is, whatever car I have i will want to tune. I already spent £1000 on a milltek exhaust and coilovers for my car and it feels like a bit of a waste if i intend on getting something within a year to carry on buying bits. I do 60-80 miles a day to work. My car has been very reliable but a lot of stuff is wearing out quickly because of the milage its already done.

I love the leon cupra r as well, but its a bit more pricey and the ibiza is lighter and therefore more agile i would have thought?

Jez i hardly see any ibiza's about. Partly why i want it is cause people will think "rubbish little young persons hatchback".

Another question. Anyone know what seat are like for servicing costs? I don't mind gettting my hands dirty but nice to keep FSH.

Thanks for all the advice so far :)

There is no reason why not if you are sure you can controll yourself well enough.

Most people told me not to get my current car as a first car, its not fast at 8.7 to 60 but everyone was still telling me not to go for it becuase I wouldn't know how to handle it. 6 months on I've had loads of fun and it has postponed a car change. I've not had a single bump, scratch or scrape with it, I think the conern is more other drivers than yourself.

Just my view, however insurance would be a killer as you said. I've been recently looking at a Clio 182, found a very nice one with low miles for 9.5k but the insurance was 2.6k :/ bit of a joke when a CTR is 2100 for me.

edit: 60-80 miles? What about a leon cupra tdi. Or another interesting diesel. Had my first drive in one the other day and they're good fun, and the turbo kick is very addictive.

I'm guessing you mean the 1.8T one that's about 6k, or do you mean the cheaper 2.0 16v NA?

If the former then the reason I didn't go for one was the Clio was better and cheaper :) Once you start throwing cash at them then they do become quicker and handle better, but I didn't want to have to throw cash/modify the car to make it as good as something that was cheaper and standard.

I'll throw money away on cars when I have something worth modding :)

Define why the clio is better than an ibiza cupra?

The cupra you get far more for your money and imho carries better reliability than any french hatchback :)

Yeah i'd go for the 1.8T. £500 on chipping and tuning sees it to 200-212 bhp.

rlm I wouldn't mind a performance diesel. But you have to fork out more for the actual car in the first place. So I would have to weigh it up.

The Clio 172 is perhaps one of the greatest hot hatches ever produced.

The Ibiza Cupra is a Polo based shopping car with a powerful engine.

:D

But £500 modding, means lots of cash on insurance , arguably money lost. Stick with the weekday commuting car, and find a weekend motorsport hobby to learn driving / mechanicals.

No it doesn't im with greenlight insurance and they only wanted an extra 5% on my annual premium with my remap, supersprint exhaust and dynatwist filter

The_one i was looking at yours earlier, very nice. Not old enough to go with greenlight, but adrian flux would insure me i think. I am going to ring them for a quote tuesday and hopefully its really expensive. If not I might have to do it.
