Why Upgrade?

Iv recently in the last couple of years got back the bug of computers ever since my last pride n joy the comm amiga 512k, these days im adult with young kids who are very wise to technology,im happy with pac man and space invaders, but as far as i can see these xbox"sPS3 and Wii"s that we have will be the standard for any comp game programmers as they are the target mass to the marketing people, when I find a PC version of a game it is of no more quality than a consule version, yet are comps maybe running with multiple graphics cards and significantly bigger rams at a expense of many fold the consule value,I wonder and if anyone can give me reason to upgrade my pc beyond the need to browse the internet or listen to music?watch Films ect if its for family entertainment and does not need business applications.?

My mate from University has a 1.6GHz Atom Netbook, and it simply isn't enough for what we need to do... It takes forever for Ruby on Rails commands to execute which discourages him from ever using his net book for learning Ruby on Rails further, wastes precious time.

I consider waiting for something that should be able to complete execution almost emmidiately last for almost a minute long unacceptable for my standards, which is also why I replaced my AMD neo based netbook for a proper ULV core2duo based one, It has increased my productivity drammatically.

So basically, the reason why you should upgrade is so that your kids could potentially learn essensial skills quicker and become more productive in the modern world.

I'm not saying Software/Web Development, Graphic Design, 3D rendering etc. are essensial, but they might show some very good interest in it at one point. There are also so many different ways of using your computer that can be used practically for everyday tasks such as making a professional CV, time management, project management etc.

PC's are not just for games. I started using PC for gaming and not used any other and I grew interest in how computers work, and my dad taught me about the physical side of the computer, he had some good knowledge of computers at the time even though he wasn't an IT guy, but he was into electronics so he was interested in the hardware side of things.

You probably don't want to hear how I got into Softwre/Web Development as the post would be too long and there is no point to just to get my points acrossed.

I am now very much into Software/Web Development and barely play any games anymore, although I still obviously play and enjoy gaming from time to time.

The point is, you'll never know what your kids will grow interested in. They might show some special talent in the IT world, you'll just never know until you introduce it to them.

edit: although by the sound of it, you already have a decent PC, but gaming in a PC is a lot more educational for lots of reasons, I would know, because It is how I got started.

Thank you doiks14,You are correct as overs that my kids are learning essential skills, having pc"s has deff been a benefit and would recomend if not say it essential part in the modern world, even the last government aknowleged that and gave out free computers to familys who otherwise could not afford it.You say i prob wouldnt want to hear how you got into software development, but i can guess that it the old fashioned way of living and learning, even I got an emenss satisfaction of creating my own program in 1984 with a spectrum 128K which i wired up to create an alarm system all written by me in 48K basic, yes i watch them develope and computers are an essential part I marvel at there knowlege and deep facination indeed pc"s are the way foward,However there are two tracks the mega expensive investment for gaming qaulity and the way to just do what it needs,ie media..when me kids get older prehaps i will have a heart attack as they ask for some big media application. thankyou again

PC gaming is only a graphics card (£40+) more expensive than a mid-high spec media PC, so I don't see how expensive you are thinking.

+ cost of the games themselves of course.

doiks14 i currently have a gt220nvidia,it standerd issue in a mid size HP case, sometimes the card slows down to 1 frame per 5-10 seconds, most of the time it fine even on BO,COD
in order to upgrade that card as it only a budget card and draws virtualy no power i will need 1,Power supply,2 case which will fit the next generation graphics cards, the length of my midi hp case is 400mm also can only cater for two HD,If I gona have to buy a case then it would be silly not to have one for future expansion ie a full tower, plus my 300W PW supply will need uprgrading along with the graphics card which was the origional reason to upgrade,so go go that next step requires sig investment, which i can stretch to.but when i think sensibly it is kinda over investment compared to running PC at media level and running consule for games seperately?

ChrisJSY i think answers my question, thank you,ill stick to the xbox for games, and use the pc for communication and of course the FPS until microsoft bring out something KB n mouse quality, apologies to everyone maybe your not as fit as me who can say all this in one sentence,or you didnt pass your a levels when it was all about qaulity rather than grammer.Cheers n bless

You made your trolling too obvious with that post.

The difference in cost isn't as large as it might first seem. People tend to compare the cost of a PC and a monitor with the cost of a console alone. That's not a fair comparison, obviously. Then there's the usual difference in price between PC games and console games, so buying a PC usually saves you £10-£15 per game. That can mount up.

thank you van helseek but where is the rest, you left me with a cliff hanger missing the rest of the story! Apologies for everyone who were getting mentaly out of breath with me long sentences.
Prehaps my issue is because im a bit despndent as to where to go from here with our system, basically to get to the next level we need a graphics card,to fit the graphics card we need a larger case, and power. To hold the case we need a bigger desk.To hold the bigger desk ill prob need to reorganise the entire layout of the room,or buy a new house with bigger rooms. All for the sake of 1 graphics card.
I know im setting the cat amongst the pigeons with you guys as to the benefits of the consule over PC. Some very good arguments for PC.
There is a good satisfaction of setting up and creating your own system and not being subserviant to microsoft or sony.
Therefore will continue to look to upgrade where possible and my quest for a decent graphics card which will fit in my current HP mid size case goes on....

Because if using and gaming on a PC is your hobby then the small cost of upgrading it once every 3 years or so isn't a huge price to pay. People spend more on gym club membership.

Go mad and use paragraphs too. Your posts are unreadable, and it's pretty ignorant to continue to write in such a fashion after people have been quietly pointing this out to you.

edit.
um, your last post is getting better, I still can't bring myself to read it though.

Sorry, but you make Angus Haggins posts look more readable.

My first thought & Lol @ Haggins.

I believe (or so it would seem[to me{Zefan(Of these forums[OcUK Forums])}]) that you are referring to (at least a post made by your account [doiks14 {on these forums (OcUK forums)}]) a previous member named Angus Higgins.

Lol Eggface :p

Yes, Angus Higgins sorry.

Why OCUK found his posts unacceptable and OP's just barely acceptable is beyond me. :p

Huggins would have been better. :D

OP.
What the **** are you on about ??? + :p

I liked Angus Higgins' posts. No seriously, I found his bizarre posting style kind of interesting and I don't know why.

Rather that than the absolute mess of the OP, or Pottsey's utterly retarded phobia of the quote button.
