Iv recently in the last couple of years got back the bug of computers ever since my last pride n joy the comm amiga 512k, these days im adult with young kids who are very wise to technology,im happy with pac man and space invaders, but as far as i can see these xbox"sPS3 and Wii"s that we have will be the standard for any comp game programmers as they are the target mass to the marketing people, when I find a PC version of a game it is of no more quality than a consule version, yet are comps maybe running with multiple graphics cards and significantly bigger rams at a expense of many fold the consule value,I wonder and if anyone can give me reason to upgrade my pc beyond the need to browse the internet or listen to music?watch Films ect if its for family entertainment and does not need business applications.?
My mate from University has a 1.6GHz Atom Netbook, and it simply isn't enough for what we need to do... It takes forever for Ruby on Rails commands to execute which discourages him from ever using his net book for learning Ruby on Rails further, wastes precious time.
I consider waiting for something that should be able to complete execution almost emmidiately last for almost a minute long unacceptable for my standards, which is also why I replaced my AMD neo based netbook for a proper ULV core2duo based one, It has increased my productivity drammatically.
So basically, the reason why you should upgrade is so that your kids could potentially learn essensial skills quicker and become more productive in the modern world.
I'm not saying Software/Web Development, Graphic Design, 3D rendering etc. are essensial, but they might show some very good interest in it at one point. There are also so many different ways of using your computer that can be used practically for everyday tasks such as making a professional CV, time management, project management etc.
PC's are not just for games. I started using PC for gaming and not used any other and I grew interest in how computers work, and my dad taught me about the physical side of the computer, he had some good knowledge of computers at the time even though he wasn't an IT guy, but he was into electronics so he was interested in the hardware side of things.
You probably don't want to hear how I got into Softwre/Web Development as the post would be too long and there is no point to just to get my points acrossed.
I am now very much into Software/Web Development and barely play any games anymore, although I still obviously play and enjoy gaming from time to time.
The point is, you'll never know what your kids will grow interested in. They might show some special talent in the IT world, you'll just never know until you introduce it to them.
edit: although by the sound of it, you already have a decent PC, but gaming in a PC is a lot more educational for lots of reasons, I would know, because It is how I got started.
