hi i brought a rex-x nitro rc car
rex-x2.jpg
about 2 weeks ago (only started it yesterday because i went on holiday a day after i brought the car). It was fine yesterday i ran in the engine then i left the car to cool down for 30 mins or so then when i came back to it to try and start it it wouldnt go and i havnt had it started since. Ihave have replaced the glow plug and fully charged the glow start. Put it on a rich setting but it still wont go. so does anyone know whats wrong with it and how i can get it going again.
thanks in advance for any help :)

Try leaning out the fuel. Check that the air filter isn't soo dirty it is blocking the air from getting to the engine - possibly try cleaning it. Check for no blockages/air bubbles in the fuel line.

Not a lot else I can think of as these are pretty simple machines. :)

My friends air boat doesn't need a air filter, along with any nitro planes. So you can't run it but not drive over any dirt or around dusty places with out a filter. A well venterlated, shelterd place is good. If anything gets into the engine block than it could cause damage.

you cant strt it without the filter can you because if any crap from the air gets in it will wreck the engine wont it??

you can....just dont run it anywhere.

If its not starting though i wouldnt tend to lean it out straight away.

Try blasting the engine with a hair dryer...do it till its hot to touch....then have another go at starting.

what?? blast the cooling head??wont that damage it and it not to make things quicker could i use a hot air gun. what will blasting the cooling head do anyway??

The same as a glow start but more affective. It is a good idea to do this to a brand new engine that doesn't start first time.

How hot is a hot air gun?

they can go up to about 200oC but i aint gunna use it as i just remembered what happened last time i used it on my schumacer mission it melted all my electrics :D

Dont know if its a good idea, but, when my engine was quite new I was told to unscrew the glowplug 1/4 of a turn to reduce the compression, this seemed to work very well. The engine would then start quite easily, wait for it to warm up and retighten the plug.

No, but if it has a cheap battery inside you will be wearing it out, so it will eventually not be able to charge fully and keep it for extended periods.

I haven't heard of that method before. I do know the hair dryer one is a good thing to do with a new engine, so may help in this case.

You didn't flood the engine when trying to start it though? Have you let it sit for a while?

so you dont suggest i do what DreederOcUK said to do

No untighting the glowplug is also a good thing to try on a new engine. this also helps if you have flooded it slightly

The hairdryer will not get the engine as hot as it will be when running so yourfine blating it with the hairdryer.

These engines are effected by temp a lot. My OS vspec on my mugen doesnt start until i have giving it a good blast with the hairdryer.....i do it with every nitro i have before running

New engines are allways tight to start with, they get better over time.

Anyway.
Check your glow starter is woking and the glop plug is glowing fine.
Ensure the engine is primed with fuel, and also make sure you havent flooded it.

If it doesnt start, loosen the plug 1/4 of a turn and try again.
If it still doesnt start, grab a good hairdryer, put it on its max setting and warm the cooling head up till its hot to the touch, and attempt to start the engine again.

It should start now without a problem, but Nitro engines tend to be tempermental so keep at it.

thanks for the help guys my motor has started but the only way i could get it to go was put hairdryer on it then open the throttle slightly to allow for more air intake. the problem is because i have to open the throttle slightly to get it started it wont idle the wheels just keeps spinning and then when you let go of the throttle and it goes back to orignal position the motor cuts out. so how can i allow for more air intake without having the wheels spin??

You have to open the throttle to get it started, ie when you pull the pullstart (or use the starter motor) you have to push the accelerator forward a bit. Once it starts you normally have to give it some revs until it warms up, then it'll idle by itself.

If it floods you can take the glowplug out and pull the engine over a few times which will blast any excess fuel out the hole. You can check the glowplug by putting it in the starter and putting some power on it. It should glow red hot almost instantly.
