Why would anyone buy a 6970 over this GTX480

Wow!!!

I didn't realise my thread would cause such a stir... after hearing everyones views, I'm quite glad I got myself a genuine 6970 on release.

the 480 is a bargain at that price regardless of noise, power or heat issues.

how is it then more advantageous to buy a gtx 480 over a 6970 if you will be forced to get an aftermarket vga cooler - voiding your warranty in the process - just to keep it tame at 72c

£200 + £40-50 (gpu cooler) is not really a killer deal for what it is i.e. a watt sucking, heat convector of a graphics card, I am sorry. That is the whole reason I kept away from it and bought myself a 6950 instead.

+1

Welcome to the "Graphics card section" at OCUK :D. Where battles are pitiful and the tension always runs high. Green side?. Red side?. Choose wisely and try not to be one of these "Oh I like both Nvidia and ATI" as you have been lying to yourself.

I'm joking of course but sometimes it feels a little like that, apart from liking both companies equals lying to yourself :D.

Be happy with your 6970, I'm happy with my 6970, oh wait sorry I have a 6970 with 6950 memory timings to be honest but the difference in FPS is so tiny it's not worth going into anything detailed for about 1/10th of a difference :D.

^^ Read his posts again, to come the conclusion I'm trolling is frankly laughable at best. In case you didn't notice I'm putting up links to back myself up, I'm not spouting bull. You got anything to add on topic...?

I'm not the only one who thinks it's trolling either..

Same old biased BS from yourself again, do you ever give it a rest?

Complete crap go away.

I have a pair of watercooled 480's running in SLI. They run at 920core and are overvolted to 1.125v. Under Furmark (a load that will never happen under gaming conditions) I have not seen them go above 65C, and to be honest my WC setup is a pretty poor and amateurish first attempt (see sig). In my opinion I'd say that was keeping the temps under control seeing as stock can hit 90+.

I'd push them even higher if I could, but I think I am hitting the limits of what the rest of the card can handle (power regulation especially).

To add a bit of sanity to the noise argument...

Those of you who have quiet 480s, go to whatever youi're using to control fan speeds and rack it up to 80-100%. That's what it sounds like under load in a badly cooled case.

Realise everybody has a different tolerence for noise. I personally cannot stand it unless I'm playing a game, at which point I've got sealed monitors in which block out almost all sound. But if the PC is idling I want it utterly silent.

This thread seems to be people talking in hyperbole, and unable to conceive that someone else may have a different perception and tolerance of noise.

This is true, but surely someone that's splashing out a few hundred pounds on a video card would (you'd hope) have a decent case anyway?

Whilst the 480s are obviously not silent, how many people play games without the sound on

If it gets to noisy there's a simple solution, turn your speakers up, you'll soon drown out any noise from a video card.
