Picked up a nice new monitor today (LG W198WA) which has the added bonus of a TV tuner and loads of inputs.

Been at work toda and figured to test it out with my laptop (Toshiba Tecra M2) which has a Geforce FX Go5200. This was plugged in the analog connection.

Even with a modified (nv4_disp.inf) drivers (as the NVIDIA drivers no longer support my video chipset) I just can't get the native resolution on the monitor.

I've even tried various tools but it simply looks like the driver doesn't support it (at least on my laptop).

Just about to head home to try it on my equally aged ATI Radeon 9600 Pro (on DVI) and on latest Catalst drivers. Hopefully it'll work ( ) but I'm so frustrated at Windows XP, drivers and monitors not letting me set the right setting.

Why is it so difficult to achieve?

Is Vista support for widescreen (and older chipsets) any better?

If my 9600 Pro doesn't work then I'll have to get a new AGP card that supports wide screen 1440x900. Does anyone have any suggestions (just in case)

My 9600 Pro supported 1440x900 just fine on XP, not a clue about the FX though as I haven't used nvidia since the Geforce 4 MX range eons ago.

Don't know if this helps but i ran 1440x900 res on a gforce4 440mx 64mb for a while.

Which is very old, so i doubt you'll have problems.

(You can get it for £6 off the bay)

I worried over nothing. The monitor and card picked up each other and its running in 1440x900 no problems with my 9600 Pro.

It looks lovely in native resolution, however my wife was on the computer and I came in and she had reduced the resolution  and had took it out of native resolution... She said it was because the fonts were too small - I've upped the DPI and kept the native res.

Lol mine does that too

I've offered her a 19" 1280x1024 TFT in the past for her machine and she insisted on running it at 1024x768 , so she's back on a hulking big 19" CRT and still running it at 1024.

Sold the TFT after realising I was fighting a losing battle trying to explain about TFTs and Native resolutions :D
