wife work troubles!

Practical advice 1 : She should get out as it's clear she's either not up to it or, more likely, not wanted there.

Practical advice 2 : If she does want to stay and feels she's able to do the role and is being victimised then lawyer up or at least get non-internet opinions.

Comedy advice (my preferred option) : BURN THE BUILDING DOWN.

What is the job and what is the training as said is by far the most important information.

Say they were a doctor, they needed to update knowledge and evidence that by undertaking a test, having upto date knowledge would be deemed by all as crucial for being able to undertake that role.
Would you be happy a doctor who repeatedly failed to prove they were upto date on medical knowledge carried on in their role?
But say same doctor was expected to undertake an Excel test and was completely useless at Excel, would you still sack him?

Things change in the real world and things that were not a requirement of a role have to be added, think Financial services, changes to health and safety legislation etc

So main question, is the training (and proof by passing) directly relevant to being able to complete the job competantly

If she's only been there 6 months then they can let her go without going through warnings and such like anyway.
Well done on reading the op ;)

Multiple times? And what has happened to the other people that have failed more than once? Were they dismissed?
No one else has been threatened with the sack afaik. Don't know what has been suggested to the others with multiple fails. I know that the manager is lieing and telling my wife that everyone passed when they have not... In her test today, 1 person out of 7 passed.

todo:
buy matches.

She doesn't want to stay, but nor does she want to be looking for a job 'right now', more like a few months from now.

software development with a fair amount of DB stuff. Not sure on the specifics of training - I think the providers are contracted.

correction. trainers are from the same company, but from different country's office.

Has she receievd any feedback on her failed trainning exams? If not why not?

They do not provide any kind of feedback or tell you what you got wrong - all you get is a mark.

Dont know why it's that way. Probably because the tests were staggered and they didnt want information sharing between colleagues

Pretty tricky one really. There are plenty of developers that are not up to scratch out there and if you are required to be competent with a particular language or skill set then you are not a lot of use if you don't possess that.

If its software development with a focus on databases then it may be a little trickier to fight as there is often a correct answer that is easily marked. If it was support training or something harder quantified you may have a better chance.

What previous programming and database experience does she have?

this is her first job out of uni so all experience + training is from this company.

She will be first to admit she doesn't like the role very much and will be looking for a change when the time comes. However, she can do it, although a bit slower than some of the other people.

That could be an issue as their are not technically asking her to take on any additional responsibilities or anything, just keep up to date so she is competent to do her job.

I don't see the problem?

If your wife is unable to pass a test she is required to take then why should she be kept on as she is obviously not capable of what she is being asked to do?

The only option I can see is study for the next test to the best of her ability and if she fails again find another job, if not great :)

I am an electrician, if I could not pass the IEE reg updates then my firm would sack me after a couple of tries.
