WiFi : Poor latency/high packet loss - Any advice?

Hi I have just moved into a new place, the distance between the router and PC is more than what I'm used to and so the USB adapter is only getting 2/5 bars of signal. My laptop will say the signal quality is 4/5 however.
I can normally play games online for a short while with a latency of 50-180ms but the signal frequently drops and I get kicked.

Would using the USB wifi adapter with the laptop sharing the wifi via ethernet at the same time potentially reduce packet loss? Or would windows automatically just use one network connection by default anyway?

My last resort will be to get a long ethernet cable and put the laptop on the stairs to collect the wifi! I THINK that might work. Does anyone have any more sane ideas that don't include admitting defeat? And last of all, do I have such poor character for wanting to move elsewhere based on the sole reason I can't game with 25ms ping? :P

edit: I am going to do a bandwidth/latency test on both the laptop and the PC to see if the percieved signal quality from windows is proportional to actual data transmission.

You need a basline. so I would suggest plugging the laptop directly to the router via ethernet, to see what your are actually getting, and then compare that to the wireless performance.
