Will 2 x 4gb 680s in SLI be enough....

You should be fine, if you run 2xaa or not run everything full ultra. A mix of High and medium and it should still run very well.

It depends on the game. The biggest issue will be the lack of memory bandwidth available on the GTX 680s over anything else.

I'm looking to output new games at the highest settings with 2xAA minimum.
I do have enough in the budget to upgrade to 970 SLI, possibly 980 but that would be a stretch.

What are your thoughts?

I do love my 680s but, based on your comments I'm going to struggle to get that highest setting.

+1 for 970s if you want to upgrade. Though it may be worth seeing how your 680's fair first.

I had a couple of 2gb 680's in 5760x1080 which were ok with medium / high settings and low aa as nutsnut said.

The 970s seem to be the route to go. I've now got to decide which ones....

I think the Galax Black Edition looks nice or perhaps wait for the reference design.
Not a lot i can do till the LG curved comes in, I'm hoping its soon.

680's wont be too bad, the 256 bus hasn't caused me any issues (even downscaling some games to 1440p) although given the res of that screen I couldn't give you any helpful advice.

both cards have the 256 memory bus, if you can OC your 680's to 7008 on the memory then your bandwith is the same the only thing you will be missing out on is the extra power from the 970/80's updated core.
