i want to play all games.. I don't care aslong as they look good and can run at max res..

Which should i get?

It may struggle with some newer games at max details with all the fireworks enabled as imo 320MB isn't really enough to store the texture memory needed running at 1680*1050, especially when you add AA/AF.

But if you turn a few details down it should be fine, you can do this without really sacrificing much visual quality.

So would i be worth hanging out for the r600?

I have £200 max to buy a nice grapics card...

Well you could... but as Dutch says don't count on it being £200. You could use the extra time till it's released to save up £30 or £40 extra just in case I suppose...

Either way with R600 so close to release I don't think you have anything to lose by waiting a couple more weeks.

I doubt a X2900XT will be under 200 quid.

So would i be ok with a GTS? Would i get some decent gaming or would it be really really bad?

Best thing to do would be to Google some 320MB 8800GTS reviews and take a good look at some figures... at the end of the day with a bit of common sense you can probably guess it's not going to be "really really bad", but it just may struggle a little in some newer titles with everything cranked up due to the lower memory it has. :)

Gaming will be very good, but the problem is that as soon as you use 8xAA or 16xAA (something that is perfectly usable with a 8800GTS) you can find yourself in a situation where more than 320MB of memory is needed and when that happens the framerate drops dramatically.

To avoid that you can lower detail and/or AA but that isn't what you want as it makes the game look worse.

On the other hand the 320MB could be enough for everything, I just don't know for sure, what you can do is look at reviews of 320MB cards and look at what games they use and what resolution and settings.

It really does depend on the game... games that are very resource and texture heavy will use that extra memory... games that have efficient, less demanding engines will be fine on 320MB. Personally I don't like having anything less than 512MB... but saying that I have got a 320MB 8800 GTS in my rig now to tide me over till the new cards are released. :)

I think the 320MB version would even be OK on 1920x1200 as long as you don't go mad on the AA. I hope so anyway, i'm thinking of getting one for my 24"...

this is the problem I'm having

trying to decide if I should penny pinch and go for a 320mb with a dell 22" or say to hell with it and get a 640mb and a dell 24" (putting me in the bad books with the account manager :D )

I really wouldn't to be honest, unless you're a pretty light gamer. A 24" screen should really be using a 640MB or higher for gaming.

Currently running one at 1920x1200 and not had any problems with frame rates.

Future games will be fine because there will always be a switch that will cater for cards with lower memory configurations. Read the majority of cards. So far I cant see any difference between the GTX and the GTS in the games I have played so far. I suspect the only thing that will suffer is AA and I would imagine 2X and 4X would be available most of the time.

I'm running WOW with 8xAA and max AF and its silky smooth.

The 320 GTS is a GEM of a card as Gibbo would say

BUY NOW! :D

Have you tried Oblivion, Sup Com etc at native res on that with max eye-candy? What games do you usually play?

Not tried Sup Com with this card but my X1950XT 256MB card would play it at 1920x1200 with max detail and no AA. So I exepct this card to walk it.

Tried.

Rainbow 6 Vega's @ 1600x1200. Max detail. Very smooth.
Stalker 1920x1200 full detail didnt try AA because it was left in the last state.
Oblivion 1920x1200 can't remember the detail settings , very smooth
C&C3 Max detail and AA

Only had the card a few days.

Bottom line is my X1950XT 256MB played everything at 1920x1200 with some AA usually. So go figure on the 320 GTS

Have you used one ???

Graphic cards are getting a lot like PSU's. I think we need a reality check :)
