or is the sound only as good as what the speakers put out?

Missus has a Biostar Mobo(she has a Ideq) with T supermarket 2.1 speakers which i brought for months ago on the very cheap(less than 20) just to have some sound and for what they are they do sound quite nice and give off a decent level of bass, but im in the process of trying to sort out a new build for her as that Ideq was 30 quid used and a stop gap really and as she likes to listen to music from youtube and from a dj streaming site(she not dj, site just has good music) and with no real intentions on replacing the speakers im trying to debate whether a dedicated sound card will benefit or just simple onboard is the keeper..

I don't think so. The best way to improve sound quality is to improve the speakers. It would be pointless upgrading to a sound card with those speakers.

Sound card can only do so much. It's the speakers or headphones that create the actual sound, so ultimately they will have a far bigger impact on the sound quality than any sound card.
