I have just brought a new p55 motherboard and so far from what I can hear, my music seems quieter than my old board. Surely it can't be the on board sound being worse when the board is about 3 years newer and a high-end board...

So will a sound card help improve the sound through my headset, if so what do you recommend? I wouldn't want to spend more than £20-30.

What's your headset?

If it just won't go loud enough, you could just get a cheap headphone amp like a CMOY or FiiO e5.

You're looking at a much more expensive soundcard for something with a decent amp built in.

Tbh i'd expect onboard sound on mainstream boards to be less than great. Even my workstation board that cost me £200 had aweful onboard sound.

Get the creative extreme audio if you can afford it, i had that card's predecessor and it was great for me until i could afford the fatality sound card!
