Will Apple ever release a games console?

I'm betting you run an iPod Touch on Windows.
And you'd win that bet. I'm on for another marathon reinstallation session tonight. I might actually get to put some music on the thing after two weeks of having it :/

As for the pippin, I think it suffered from an unfortunately childish and puny-sounding name, and the fact that the controllers look as though they are designed to be thrown away...

They'd have better luck just trying to get game developers to support their platform more. Since Microsoft seems torn between the PC and 360 platforms Apple could say they were the only ones truly supporting desktop gaming and chances are some people would actually buy that line if they got enough third party support.

If they do I'd have incredibly low expectations for it.

Underpowered, overpriced, with a poor controller, expensive games and restrictive online store would be my expectations.

I bet it'd be well ****ing shiny though and probably milled from a single slab of solid marble.
That's not to mention the solid ivory pads.

The other factor besides just bringing out a console is having an in house development team for games. Nintendo, Sega, Sony & Microsoft all have/had them who bring out quality 1st party titles, which is very important on a console launch.

With a brand new console to the market with no current share, you would have to have an inhouse team developing games to get people to buy the console. No Publisher is going to have their developers create games for a console that has no market share.

A stand alone console? I dont think they need to TBH, the Iphone/Touch is all they need. Pretty sure not long after the 3GS was released Apple announced 40 million touch units sold in around 2 years, all have the ability to play games.
The App store is starting to get some big franchise games, tiger woods for example and is ideal for casual gamers as the price of games are so cheap compared with most other gaming platforms.
All I see is apple extending this service and its range of devices it can be used on, at its current sales it will outsell the PSP soon (if it hasnt already) and start to become a more serious gaming system.

Knowing Apple I could see them trying all on their own.....

But - collaboration with someone else? Obviously that limits things but it would give them the penetration they need. Next gen wii in 2 flavours anyone - kiddie poo (sorry wii mk2) or grown up apple i-motion? How many execs would have had a wii in their office for some late night yoga if it wasn't a nintendo? Don't forget also that tomorrows exec were yesterday's wii wave your arms in a daft manner abouts.

The only other viable option for me would be sega. I'm not sure how the company evolved after ditching the hardware market but they've got the inhouse expertise to do it tomorrow with enough money. How fat is apple's purse atm?

edit- just checked the pippin out on the bay of tat and the only listong is a controller with the adb connector for £80!!! World wide there's a new console bundle for £250!! Obviosuly being Apple this represents a massive discount off new.

A lot of the comments here are just designed to start yet another Mac Vs PC thread. Apple probably won't be producing a console. Their desktops and laptops aren't exactly known for their gaming and the iPhone isn't marketed as just a gaming device, the marketing lies mainly around the apps and Internet connectivity.

Would they ever bring out a console again? I seriously doubt it. But Would they release something that has multiple functions one of which was gaming? More then likely they will at some point (I know the iPhone/iPod plays games :p)

Anyway what would be the point of an Apple console? The games would play like crap because the pads would only have 1 button :D

Just to add there is no money in consoles anyway (unless your Nintendo), all the money is in the software. Of which apple has no major game development studios as far as I know.

Whether they've tried and failed aside.... I'd never say never.

To all the people saying they wouldn't be able to do it, and I hope they don't etc...etc...

I very much doubt that people were sat here 10-15 years ago thinking Microsoft would be a dominant figure in consoles.

Their first try with the original Xbox went okay, but was nowhere near the success of the 360. If developers sign up, the gameplay/graphics are above par and the console provides enough content then why not? I'm sure they would do okay.

If they can bring something new to the table like the Wii did, then I'd welcome it with open arms.

Speaking personally, I really don't want another console in my living room that does exactly the same as the other three I own.

I don't think we have room for a 4th major console vendor right now, unless they do something drastically different.

The thing is Microsoft have always had an ambition to be in everyones home where as Apple target a more select customer and this can come accross as stuffy.

I love my MacBook and iphone but i know what Apple are, and there is no way Apple could or would be able to bring a console out that would compete with Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo except for asthetics.

I also agree with nikebee, we have enough consoles already!

And it would be a powerful as a PS2 knowing apples slowness on taking up new tech.

lol....

Just because Apple products use slower processors than you may get in a top spec Dell doesn't mean it is slow on taking up tech. In fact Apple are the at the forefront of creating and implementing NEW tech.

Firewire 800, LED backlit displays, Backlit keyboard, Unibody manufacturing, glass trackpad, Displayport, Dual Gigabit ethernet, Wireless, Bluetooth, multitouch mouse, in fact any other new computer tech that has come about in recent years has been implemented by Apple years before the PC market clambers to catch up. Same with the iPhone, as the saying goes, "Those who dare, win!", Steve Ballmer thought it was going to flop because "It doesn't have a full size keyboard", now look at him! Mug!

And as stated above, where can you get a 27" hi res display other than in the iMac? So many poorly informed haters about.

I doubt Apple would may a console though but there has been talk of Apple buying out EA because of the amount of cash reserves Apple has been hoarding. If Apple was going to release a console it would be revolutionary much like the iPhone was to the phone market.

Good post. The people who seem to assume all Apple products are overpriced for what they are and that Apple are years behind in technology obviously know absolutely nothing about Apple or Mac's and are only highlighting their own ignorance in the idiotic posts.
