Simple question really,

Would I be able to watch hd dvd movies in proper hd with an LG Flatron L1710B TFT screen?

It's native resolution is 1280x1024, would this affect things? I also use the 360 via VGA only, and that is the only option I have.

Thoughts, knowledge, suggestions?

Yes, you'll be able to watch them, but only in 720p, which is what 1280x1024 is the equivalent. The movies will look great in 720p, although you wont be able to see them in full glory without running at their native 1080p, but your monitor, along with the majority of peoples HDTVs and TFTs, wont be able to run that resolution.

You can but what's the point, the screen will be so small there will be no noticable change from DVD

Depends on how close he's sitting though doesn't it? I can tell the difference on HD stuff and DVDs on this monitor, though if I sat any further away, the difference wouldn't be worth it personally.

Ok guys thanks, for some reason I'm just really desperate at the moment for HD. I can't afford a reasonable sized HD TV that can do 1080p at the moment til around summer time.

I was just wondering if I should try and wait til I have one of those, or just go ahead and buy the player now.

Yes, you will. The output format for the video will be 1280x720 letterbox as you dont have a widescreen monitor (much the same as you get if you watch a widescreen DiVX etc at fullscreen on your monitor at the moment).

Obviously, the 1080p output will be downscaled by the 360 to fit your screen so you are watching HD DVD but not at native resolution. Will still look very good though.

Doh - I go away for 5 minutes and a whole threads been answered! ;)

still gave me good info though!

So even though it's downscaling and not native, will it really still look good as you say, are you sure it wont look blurry like my monitor does if i set it to a non native resolution like 1024x768??

It'll look like a normal DVD on 1024x768 probably, if you're watching at widescren as it'll have black bars either side, which works out to be 576p.

i have the same monitor (LG) - so what type of LCD PC monitor would you have to get so you dont get letterboxing etc?

it'll look better. hidef material still looks better on a 5:4 screen than dvd video does. He can always stretch the video horizontally just a little.

It wont be near its true potential, but it's still better than dvd video and if he's intending to get a decent screen id say it was worth it.

anything that runs at 1080p 1:1 so thats....well not a lot. even 24" 1920x1200 screen will letterbox if you absolutely INSIST on displaying a 1:1 image due to 1080p having a lower vertical resolution (1080 vs 1200 on the actual display)

ahh dont think i will be able to afford a 24" :(

How about 720p? Can i get an appropiate sized monitor to run games and films in 720p without letter boxing? Sorry for the obvious questions.

Problem is the vast majority of widescreen TFTs are 16:10 ratio, meaning very small black lines top and bottom, without 1:1.

So basically i need to get a monitor that supports a certain ratio? (a monitor that supports 1280x720)

How annoying ae these small black lines?

There's a lot of people on here that run on widescreen monitors, I think most will be running at normal 720p resolutions like 1366x768 or similar, and will be ever so slightly stretched to fit the screen. Not heard of anybody complaining though. You wouldn't get black lines on a 1440x900 widescreen monitor, as it'll just stretch to fit the screen fine.

it's not the resolution of the panel, its the aspect ratio. both 720p and 1080p are 16:9 resolutions. widescreen lcd monitors are 16:10 - they all have a higher vertical resolution than HD video, whether its a 24"+ 1920x1200 monitor or a smaller 1680x1050 screen, such as the 20-22" screens. 1680 / 16 x 10 = 1050. It's still a 16:10 ratio so you'll still have bars.

you have to put it in to context though, they will only be small bars!

meaning stretching the image really should be an issue. That's a compare of a 22", 26" and a 42" lcd panel at there respective native resolutions displaying a 16:9 image. curtasy of www.tvcalculator.com

edit: threw a 19" 5:4 1280x1024 panel for good measure:)
