My router is in living room and I need to connect to an Xbox 360 which is downstairs but in a different room and also connect to a PC upstairs. Basically, will one powerline plug connected to the router feed both of the others?

Also, can anyone advise as to the best powerline plugs to go for?

Yes you will need 3 powerline plugs. 1 to put the signal into in to circuit and one to take it out for each device (presuming they are far apart).

Cant help really with make.

It really depends on how much you are willing to spend. I am using NETGEAR 85Mbps Powerline Adapter twin pack for last six month or so and they are working flawlessly and if you shop around you can get these under £50.

It also depends on the wiring in your home. Bear in mind that the 85Mbps is not duplex, i.e on paper the top speed is 42.5Mbps for upstream and downstream individually (not sure how it works for three plugs).

Also these speeds only tend to be reached when the two adapters are right next to each other (and don't even thing about using multiplugs with them). As distance increases (and also factoring in stuff like wire quality, different floors etc etc) it is likely that the speed drops considerably.

So it may turn out that the networking speed provided by an 85Mbps solution may not be enough.

FYI 42.5Mbps -> 5.3125MBps which is pants if you plan on transferring large files (and this is prior to the aforementioned speedloss). If you have an ADSL2+ or Virgin 50meg internet connection it may end up being faster than your LAN speed!

Maybe a 200Mbps or 1Gbps solution may be better for you (although these cost significantly more and MAY NOT offer better performance [again depends on wiring etc]).

The BT 200mbps powerline adaptors are decent and can be had cheaply at auction due to people selling the ones that came with BT Vision. Only available in packs of two though. These seem to be the only ones available with a power pass through as well.

These powerlines seem very reliable, infact more reliable than wireless and I have a feeling if the prices start to come down it will be an option for people who have bad areas of wireless spots. I'm thinking about buying 4 devolo 200s to test.

Thanks for the replies. However, I've been thinking about this and I'm wondering if I'm stumped for using these in a certain room? Basically, this room is the conservatory and is where we have the Xbox 360. I'm no electrician but as we have to flip a switch on the wall in the conservatory to get power, is it likely that it is on a seperate circuit and does this pose a problem?

I have powerline going through a fuse box into another fuse box in the garage and it works ok.
