Single core to dual core upgrade, worth it? I don't do any encoding and multi-tasking, so just wondered if games like BF2 made use of the second core?

Well as far as i know BF2 doesn't have multicore support...so no you won't notice a difference.

You'd see a much larger increase upgrading that x800xt

You definitely wouldn't notice any difference in most games since barely any are multithreaded at the moment. Quake 4, Call of Duty 2 and Oblivion are I think, but that's about it. The X2 4400+ is just two 3700+'s stuck together, they're both at 2.2GHz and have 1MB cache. As gurusan said you'd be much better off picking up something like an X1800XT or X1900XT if you want to boost your games performance.

Yeah I went from a 3700+ to a 4400x2 because I love quake4 online so much...and getting a whole ton of people packed in a room on CTF even a fairly fast single core system gets bogged down....so I switched to dual core and there's a HUGE difference in those kinds of scenarios.

I say stick with your trusty ole' sandy until you either find a good reason to go dual core, catch the nasty upgrade virus and upgrade for no reason, or until you rebuild a new system with a conroe or something

I went from an Opteron 144 @ 2.4ghz to a 4400+ @ 2.5Ghz and in games I haven't seen much of a difference, but ripping/compressing DVD's and my music videos has improved drastically.

I'm really considering upgrading to a 4400+ too. I could buy the 3700+, but my Dad is going to USA in two weeks and with the recent price cuts I can pick one up for around £100ish.

I currently have a 3200+. I have a feeling it's holding my X1800Xt back. For instance, on full everything, 1440x900, CoD2 SP I get around 70-80fps on the Hill 400 level.

When I whack it down to 800x600, low everything, it looks crap and should run like a greased weasel turd, but I get the same FPS.

This suggests a CPU bottleneck I guess.... so would I get an improvement upgrading to a 3700+/X2 4400+ ? It's .2Ghz faster and has double the cache.

Thanks.

My previous gaming rig was an X24400+ oc'd to 2.65. I recently bought one of the excellent clocking 4000+ chips from OcUK which clocks to 3.1ish and I have noticed a sharp increase in performance due to the faster clock.

If you insist on upgrading your CPU then I would suggest getting one of the 4000+ Sandys and put the £60 odd you save towards upgrading your gfx card.

Stan :)

I went from a 4000+ to a X2 4800 and noticed a difference.

I found when I "alt-tab" in and out if games it was a lot more stable.

I use teamspeak and xfire when gaming, so although not many games take advantage of dual core cpu's, multi programs can be dedicated to one core.

For example, in BF2 I put TS, Xfire on one core and BF2 on the other.

All ea games since ages and ages are 2 threaded
I'd upgrade personally, will help in some games.
Then again you could buy a better gfx card instead, like a 1900xt.

Great guys, looks like the general consensus is to upgrade my GPU instead as the performance gains in-game of dual core is minimal. I'm actually waiting for the R600 for BF2142, so hopefully by that time the price of dual core will be even less and more games will support it. :)
