Hi guys,

I on currently running on x4200 AMD, 8800 gt gfx, old mobo and ddr.

Am looking for an upgrade.

Obviously want to keep the cost down as much as possible but want something that hopefully will also be as future proof as possible to the point that a year down the line maybe I can stick a better CPU in or something.

Anyway,

Preferably...

Something QUAD CORE!
4gig of DDR2 (of fast ram) would settle for 2gig and maybe upgrade later
A decent mobo
Decent hard-drive but doesn't have to be very big at all as I don't store much
need new case and power supply -

NOTE: VERY IMPORTANT!

the case has to be very silent and good at air cooling. Need a very quiet case and will pay about 130+ to get a good silent one.

Don't need a new GFX as my 8800gt is doing the trick for the time being.

Cheers, need all the help I can get. Will paypal £5 to the winning spec :) I know its not much :x

4gig ballistix? or whatever everybody is using at the moment.

Decent hard drive but not very big eh? how about a 150Gb raptor?

OCZ/Corsair/Enermax PSU 600w-800w? :)

Quad would be a waste Unless you encode a lot and things like that, a core 2 duo at 3.2 ghz or more and the 2200 have been hitting 3.5 - 3.6ghz is plenty enough for a long while yet.No games even utilise quads yet and very few applications even do.
I'd stick with a budget duo rig for now and bung in a q6600 if and when needed for far cheaper than it is now, or bung in a yorkfield quad which are out soon as and when needed. Then swap the board for what ever is on the horizon next no point spending £100+ on a board you will need to change in a year or so.
Ram is good for 500mhz the cosmos case is probably best for quietist on air at the moment it is designed to be quiet after all and get some yate loon fans to go with.

I'd go with HP7909's spec. That Antec case is one of the quiestest.

Oh, and speaking on behalf of the rest of the forums, no need to paypal money about. No-ones expecting it.

You will get by just fine on a 3.2 ghz duo for at least another year.
Dont be sucked in by the quad hype no games are using them or will be for quite a long time yet, by the time they do better cooler faster quads will be around.

As said above, really depends on your budget. I had a couple ideas:

Attempt1.jpg

- Expensive case, but designed for 'silence'.
- Extra fan for the intake.
- 4GB of relatively cheap RAM
- Quad Core + Tuniq tower

Attempt2.jpg

- Difference being a Wolfdale E8200 + Ballistix RAM for overclocking

Attempt3.jpg

- More budget orientated, E2200 + Ballistix for overclocking
- Cheaper Case
- Smaller HDD

Oh yeah, and I've suggested Samsung HDD's. Not cause they're necessarily the quietest nor best, but from using Hitachi, Maxtor, Seagate & Samsung, these have failed less, and tend to be very quiet. I've noticed others suggesting WD HDD's, these might be better, I just don't have any experience of them.

I don't see why(probably the fiver) people are rushing to make the spec even though he hasnt stated a budget... he might say its £200 or he might say £2000...

I see your argument, but OP's not mentioned if using the PC for other uses apart from gaming. BUT, IMO the Quad Core is the better chip to use for a year ;)

Well lets say you can get by for a year with a £60 cpu not holding you back in games or you go quad for £160 how much do you think the £60 cpu will be worth in a year ? £30 ? how about the quad £50 - £60 ? makes sense not to go quad for that reason alone.
I am already seeing q6600's go for £80-£90 second hand, buying a quad now is like chucking away £100.

Personally I'd get a cheapy dual core and clock the nuts off it, oh wait I already did :D

One thing I can defineatly say is not once have I thought to myself that my CPU is slow!

If you want to spend a bit on CPU for a higher stock clock speed then grab a new wolfdale.
