Will the 512mb 7800gt SLi up with a regular 7800gt?

As far as I am aware SLi needs to be matching cards, right down to the bios I think. Crossfire you can mix and match within the same range as long as you have a master card but you are limited to the amount of memory on the lowest card. Sorry if this doesn't help.

I understand that the latest drivers allow you to mix and match cards; a BFG and a Leadtek for example. I suspect that the different amounts of ram though will probably prevent a 256 and 512 card from being matched....but if not then i might just get one of these 'goes like hell' cards.

Yeah you can mix and match the cards now, but the Ram could be the stumbling block as you say.

The gt card with 512mb will default down to 256mb if mixed with a 256mb 7800gt card.

So it will be the same as running two 7800gt 256mb cards in sli.

Do you actually know if that's true (a source or trying it yourself), or is this just conjecture? Don't want to tell someone it will work if there's no certainty!

SLI FAQs

Can I mix and match graphics cards with different sizes of memory?

While it is not recommended, NVIDIA does offer this flexibility using Coolbits. When purchasing a second graphics card, you should try to match the memory size so that you are ensured full value and performance from your purchase. For example, if your first card is a GeForce 6600 GT with 128MB of memory, you should purchase a second GeForce 6600 GT with 128MB of memory. However, using Coolbits (value set to 18), customers can force both of the cards to use the lower of the two memory sizes and operate together in SLI Mode. When dissimilar memory sizes are enabled to work together using Coolbits, the effective memory size for each card becomes the smaller of the two memory sizes. Instructions to enable this feature can be found here.(http://www.slizone.com/object/slizone_appprofile_howto1.html)
