I'm thinking of getting this machine:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-038-OK

Will the motherboard and RAM that are part of this bundle allow the CPU to go from standard 2.66 to closer to 3.00 ? (assuming the CPU goes that far ?)
- DFI Intel 975X (Socket LGA775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
- Corsair Dominator 2GB PC2-6400 800MHz (2x1GB) CAS4 Dual Channel Kit

I know the quad core CPU runs hot, the "Intel Approved Cooler" bit needs clarifying also

thanks

They seem to do 3-3.2GHz on stock volts and yeah you won't have any problems with the RAM and MB. I would take the Intel Approved Cooler to mean the retail one, but you would need to ring or send a webnote to the shop to find out for sure.

There are some mixed veiws on the DFI board, i hear the bios is very tricky to use. I would go for a 680i, or a gigabyte board. Unless you want to take a chance with DFI's board. Some people say these are nothing like the AMD boards so i would stay clear. As even with the DFI baords lots of people had trouble with them working out the box... plus now theres no DFI street so thats another point which the DFI loses :(. Get a tuniq cooler i herd they are great.. :) lol just realised your after a pre built system. If you aint overclocking the board will be fine imo.

can i ask what you will be using the quad cpu for? i am still a disbeliever that 90% of people on this forum really don't need quad! if you have the money to waste then be my guest or if you really will be utilising the quad to it's full potential

He probobally needs a upgrade and wants to keep it future proof for a few years. Only thing he will need to do is upgrade the GFX card after a year if hes a gamer :).

It will be used for running chess engine matches, where all 4 cores will be at full load 24/7. Can't get any closer than using it to it's full potential than that. :)

The graphics card included in the spec is of course total overkill...

Cant you build your own machine then you can just drop the Video card ect, or ring the shop up and ask them if they can change the spec ?

I've always built my own machines in the past, but I'm getting a bit sick of that now. Having a machine arrive where all I need to do is push the "on" button has a certain appeal.

But you're right, what I really need is a custom build where I can specify a basic 7300GS videocard or something, and also specify an uprated cooler. I may ask them to what extent they will alter the spec, or else there may be somewhere else I could try.

Im pretty sure they will swap the spec. May cost a bit extra as they dont actually have the machines pre-built before you order them. They build them once you order them i think :).

One quick question guys - I'm going to compare this to what it might cost if I build myself. I'm totally new to DDR2 RAM, so quickly:

The Intel Core 2 is 266FSB quad pumped = 1066

Standard minimum memory is in fact a lowly PC4200 which runs at 266
PC4200 = 266FSB (DDR 533)
PC5300 = 333FSB (DDR 667)
PC6400 = 400FSB (DDR 800)
Amazingly I checked the memory FAQ and this wasn't there that I could see.

PC5300 (DDR667) would be OK for the Core 2 Quad as 333FSB would take it to about 3.3gig and I wouldn't want to push that far. So I could get PC5300 but the PC6400 has some future-proofing
