***Wimbledon 2017 Official Thread***

Remarkable really, the favourite in the womens final is 37 and the favourite in the mens final is 35. I remember when a tennis player was past it at 30.

Do you think it's because the games changed so much? Where it used to be such a serve/volley based game, now it's all about stamina, precision and strategy which are qualities that come with experience.

I suspect a lot of it is the advances in sport sciences, seems to be the case across the sporting spectrum that participants are being able to play longer and longer.

So, what are we thinking, if he wins and thereby takes the record, will he call time on his career then ,on a high ?

I'm not sure. He undoubtedly still adores playing. But as he's just admitted, his family is more important now. I'd hate to see him go, but its hard to imagine a more fitting moment.

Its possible I suppose, if he takes the win and the record, what more is there to achieve. I suppose he could try to top Navratilovas 9 Wimbledon titles, but I think it would be a big ask, even for Fed, to get 2 more Wimbledon titles after this one.

Murray/Hingis vs Watson/Kontinen in the mixed doubles final.

British winner guaranteed at Wimbledon this year

There's also a fairly good chance of a British winner in the mens and womens wheelchair doubles.

Since Murray is out I'm glad Federer is through, I'm hoping he has too much for Cilic who has been on court for almost half as much time again.

Unfortunately I'm probably not going to be able to catch the womens final tomorrow but I'd like to see Williams win even if for no other reason than we can say that Konta was beaten by the eventual champion.

I think the reason we have older champions is down to nothing more than the complete lack of top players coming through at the moment. Womens tennis has been dominated by the Williams sisters for a long time and the mens game by Federer, Nadal and Djokovic. Murray was nearly in that same category for a while but ultimately he is the next tier down. A young Federer or Nadal would dominate the current crop of youngsters. We have just been very lucky to have such a talented golden generation of tennis players in the last 10-15 years. When Federer and Co. retire it will be a real shame.
