Will be going to Wimbledon this summer in probably the second week of the tournament. If played right there will be a great opportunity to get front row or near front row tickets for the event on centre court or one of the other main ones.

I just wondered if anyone had any first hand knowledge of shooting at Wimbledon from the spectators area? Is there a restriction on equipment allowed in? (i.e lenses longer than xxx mm etc? I obviously want to avoid turning up and having some gear confiscated because your not allowed more than a little compact camera in the arena.

Have looked on the web-site without much luck.

Lol, sry, i have no idea, but i wonder if you could tell me how much some tickets cost for wimbledon because i'd love to go down there with my mates and take some photos while im there... hope you can help, cheers :)

Here you go

Can I bring my camera to Wimbledon?
Photographs (still or motion) taken inside the grounds may only be used for private, not commercial, purposes. There is no flash photography while play is in progress - cameras with automatic flashes should not be used unless the flash can be switched off. Video recording is permitted so long as it does not interfere with competitors or anyone else. It may also only be used for private and not commercial purposes.

I'm surprised how relaxed those rules are, particularly at such a major sporting event that requires quiet at the start of play. Fair play to them.

Interesting, I will just flick shutter noise off then on me 350 and away I will go! Didn't notice that before and had been through that page.

I'll be there this year - no. 1 court on the last Saturday - I'm hoping for some rain early on in the tournament ;) I got my tickets through the lottery system so I don't have to queue. :p

I was there last year as well, with my 20D and a 28-300 Sigma. I didn't take any more kit because I like to travel light and I was there to watch the tennis. Your bag will be searched before you enter.

I guess if the worlds press is allowed to be there taking pics then people in the crowd can. Its not like a DSLR's shutter is *that* distracting. Obviously if you realise mid way that you forgot your memory card don't shout out "HOLY MOLY!" ;)

I think it's the personal use bit which ties it up. How are they going to stop someone with a camera phone etc.

They can't. But they can be annoying and stop people with pro like cameras. I know they won't because they say its ok but I've been at gigs and had issues because I had a "pro" camera. Meanwhile everyone around me was perfectly allowed to use their camera phones.

The tickets we are getting require us to park and camp overnight on the street. In the morning or late evening you are issued with a reservation number, this reservation number then entitles you to front row (or within 3 rows of the front or something) on one of the main courts.

More information can be found here:

Ok, thanks. I dunno how keen i'd be on camping in london though....
