My clever girlfriend hasn't used her laptop for ages and has managed to forget the local account password. She's sure it's upgraded to Win10 but didn't convert it to her Hotmail account so it's not that password.

If she clicks the 'forgot password' it asks her to insert a usb drive, but then says it needs to be a password reset drive which she never made (obviously!).

I presume I can't make her a password reset key on my computer (?), and this is something that should have been done on her laptop previously?

Are there any other options available? Thanks.

Login to the administrator account by booting into safe mode, open a command prompt (should see it's titled administrator: command prompt), reset the password using "net user <account name> <new password>".
Can't do that as the one account is her admin account.

Trying PCUnlocker trial, but getting stuck. Her BIOS seems to be in UEFI mode, but using the UEFI PCUnlocker disk is just doesn't find it. The UEFI boot order options are a bit weird though, just say generic names like 'USB CDROM, USB HDD' which I put at the top over 'HDD' but just didn't seem to recognise it.

I tried changing the BIOS to Legacy mode and changing the boot order (and burning the legacy PCUnlocker usb disk), but it just showed black screen saying 'no bootable disk can be found'

Any ideas?

Are you sure? We're talking about the built in administrator account here, so unless she purposefully made several steps to rename it and delete the account made on first boot then it should be there and this should work.
Hmn well I might be wrong but when we tried booting into safe mode it just went into the same login screen asking for her password. Same as before.

Not sure why you're doing things with the BIOS as just holding down shift on the keyboard while clicking on restart on the login screen should restart into safe mode, safe mode should automatically login to the built in administrator account.
Yeah, as above :( I was going into the bios to change boot order to try the PCUnlocker usb utility.

We've gone for the 'reset PC' option which seems to be working. Not sure if that's an Acer option or a Windows option. We're at the point now where she doesn't mind losing everything (apparently it's all backed up...) so let's see how this turns out.
