I have 2x monitors on windows 11, 27" primary and 20" secondary in portrait.

it looks like windows 11 there is no way to have different wallpapers on different screens. Only some pointless virtual desktop feature thats of no use to me

Ive now got a wallpaper on the 2nd monitor thats cropped and looks stupid

    Go to personalize
    Background,choose a picture
Right click on the picture and choose
    Set for all monitors
    Set for monitor 1
    Set for monitor 2
    Set for monitor 3
    And so on
Works for me on preview windows 11 though
    Not tested on release version

    Windows 11 preview?
    Or public release?
Am on Dev 22471.1000 just now and it works
Clicking on the taskbar monitor/desktop icon may do
Something different but I didn't try that way

    Hmmm peculiar
Do you have extra desktops set up?
By using the monitors icon on the taskbar?
    I don't
Though guess I could try that if it's a difference between
What I have and you do

Edit I see you replied further as I was typing that

solved , you can delete the virtual desktops

To Remove the Active Virtual Desktop with a Keyboard Shortcut,
    1. Switch to the virtual desktop you want to remove.
    2. Press Win + Ctrl + F4 .
    3. The current virtual desktop will be removed.

No real need for steam wallpaper engine
Since they achieved what they wanted with
    Just windows built in options
But if you want to do more like play videos/animation etc
And use a software not windows
    Lively wallpaper is free
Can put the wallpaper on monitor1,2,3 etc
Or a combination of some but not others etc
I use it to play animations on my hardware monitor screen
That's in the pc case sometimes instead of
Just displaying the PC hardware stats
    As a wireless 3rd monitor
Probably similar to what wallpaper engine does
Never actually tried it as lively is free and does a good job
