I have a Dlink DIR-655 which works very well. Why not connect it up via ethernet? :o

Also I had that same router long ago, I ditched it because it kept dying when I put significant amounts of data through it. The 655 chumps along like a warrior, don't think i've hard a single hardware crash with billions/trillions of packets through it each day.

The software on the CD might not be Windows 7 compatible, there's no issue with the router itself being incompatible.

You've already got what is arguably the best cable router. That's not to say it couldn't be faulty, but you're better off trying to troubleshoot the problem before splashing any cash.

can you use it as a wired router for a bit?

I've had problems with the wireless on some LinkSys routers in the past.

Far more configuration options than the default firmware + adds new features including QoS for managing bandwith usage by multiple users (useful if you have heavy downloaders using the connection!)

hi

i did upgrade to the tomatoe firmware but its a bit more confusing for me to set it up, if i dont tend to use all the extra options should i just stick with the official firmware?

on the tomatoe i was having trouble with how to clone my pc's mac address and set up wpa2 encryption and also a different password to log into the routers homepage?

cheers

a router is a router, they don't care what OS you have

install Tomato, then do a clear nvram

Go to Administration/Configuration and select "Erase all NVRAM..."

Now setup the router

Without doing the clear, you can get old data stuck in the ram, which causes instability

thanks , would you happen to know where i have to clone my pc's mac address?

Go to the Advancedsection, choose MAC Address from the sub-group and choose Clone PC for the WAN port.

Alternatively, unplug your modem for a minute, plug it back in and job's a good'un. I'm assuming Virgin Cable - which means it will register the new MAC address of the router instead of the PC

ive got a home broadband cable connection which ive added a router to enable a wireless signal , i was told once by linksys support to clone pc mac address when they helped me set it up?

do i need to clone it?

thanks

ok thanks for the help guys , ive got it set up , my only question is ive selected wpa2 personal but i have the option of tkip or aes ?

what should i use?

thankis again:)

mine's set to tkip/aes, not sure of the best setting.

I've never cloned a mac address, been using virgin/ntl cable for about 8 years

im having troublr setting up my wireless printer it finds a network but its called wireless , how do i change the broadcast name of my router?

thanks

Under Basic - Network - you want to change the SSID. This is the name that's broadcast on the wifi. YOu might also need to change the name under Basic - Identification too (not sure on that one)

after all this ive had to revert to linksys firmware as i had trouble connecting my lexmark printer up wireless , it kept saying unable to obtain ip address?:(

Maybe switch to WPA-TKIP instead of WPA2-TKIP/AES. I've had issues with wireless printers/print servers not authenticating correctly/fully when using the higer encryption.
